Should Americans stop tipping?There are no tips in Japan and service is better there.It seems like tip culture actually has the opposite of the intended effect.
the reason why we have tipping is because americans are dumb. they think it means they're getting lower prices on services because the menu doesnt include tipping cost. thats why we have it. if we got rid of tipping and the menu costs raised to make up for it, americans would complain that the prices are ridiculous
American donate more to charity than any other people too. It's awful. No wonder everyone hates us and talks about us constantly.
It does seem to have been used as an excuse for restaurants not to pay their staff. When charity becomes obligation it ceases to be charitable.

Mandatory percentage is clown world but Servers used to earn their tips by being at your table just enough to not annoy you but make sure you're enjoying your experience while filling your water glass. they don't even bother with this anymore
I think you can not tip if you want, but you should tell the waiter beforehand so thay can adjust their effort appropriately

I've worked in restaurants here in three cities and a small town. You americans are great for bringing tipping culture here, I got paid well and got tips too despite people pretending it isn't a thing. I ended up getting a 9-5 but still made less than I did for years because the tips were that good, especially since they weren't taxed.
