God awful answer, as A) it simply assumes democracy as an axiomatic good, rather than attempting to argue for why that is the case, and B) even within that framework, doesn't attempt to argue for why PR is more democratic than FPTP (what's the metric for how democratic a thing is?)

>their performance in the by-election was much stronger than anyone anticipated
I think the real surprise was their Senedd performance, going from nothing to 1/3rd of the seats and denying Plaid a majority that everyone just assumed was naturally theirs
Also the relative underperformance of the Greens, still trailing Lib/Lab/Con in terms of seats, despite having a higher voter share than all 3 of them. Fairly reassuring suggestion that their support is spread thinly enough to harm their ability to win seats even with the recent surge in support they've had

Democracy is probably better than dictatorship
>why PR is more democratic than FPTP
Consider the fact that under FPTP in 2024, Labour got only about 34% of the vote, but this gave them over 60% of the seats. That's not representative. Another example was 2015 when UKIP got something like 15% of the vote but less than 1% of the seats.

saw a video on tiktok before from some british (white) economist living in switzerland and he reckons reform can't into maths and they're effectively gonna cause a massive crash if they're not outed almost as soon as getting in just like truss and kwasi were. because apparently their policies regarding cuts and what not are extremely similar to truss' mini-budged, just amplified a thousand fold and are projected by economists to cause massive issues for everyone in the uk except people betting internationally. so your mortgage rates are gonna skyrocket, your interest is gonna sky rocket, your rents are gonna sky rocket again and the only people who'll win economically from their fiscal policies are international financial interests

here it is:
https://www.tiktok.com/@henryfudgeofficial/video/7632307755855957270

here's the caption:
"Nigel Farage hasn’t done his maths.
This is a big one, in detail, so save it and watch it later I dive all the way through it and what will happen.

The IFS — Institute for Fiscal Studies — has analysed Reform UK’s 2024 manifesto. Their verdict: the arithmetic doesn’t add up by tens of billions of pounds a year. Reform’s tax cuts are larger than Kwarteng’s 2022 mini-budget. Their funding claims are weaker.
We know what Kwarteng’s mini-budget did. Gilt yields spiked. Mortgage rates went from 4.5% to 6%+. Pension funds nearly collapsed. Truss was gone in 49 days.

If Reform win and try this, the bond market response is almost certainly worse. Your mortgage goes up. Your rent follows. The pound weakens. Food prices rise.
Here’s the full mechanism — gilt yields, SONIA rates, capital flight, the domino chain. And why, mechanically, a Reform government cannot deliver the Reform manifesto.

I invite the IFS, the Bank of England, the OBR and any macro hedge fund to walk through the reform manifesto. They will agree with me. The only person Nigel farage will benefit will be international investors betting against our currency and our banks.

Send this to your friend who paints roundabouts and can’t do maths."

>Democracy is probably better than dictatorship
This is, obviously, not a simple binary given the variety of degrees to which each can exist, and the ways the two can coexist in any remotely complex political system. Nor would the preferability of democracy over one specific alternative mean that 'more' democracy is necessarily better
>Consider the fact that under FPTP in 2024, Labour got only about 34% of the vote, but this gave them over 60% of the seats. That's not representative
It's representative of the aggregate mood of different constituencies, with their distinct demographics and often competing political interests. An electoral system which instead allocated seats on a purely 'popular vote' basis would necessarily subordinate the political interests of any regions which are more sparsely populated. It would end up with a legislature which represents the interests of dense urban areas, at the expense of all others

>An electoral system which instead allocated seats on a purely 'popular vote' basis would necessarily subordinate the political interests of any regions which are more sparsely populated. It would end up with a legislature which represents the interests of dense urban areas, at the expense of all others
So you think the votes of rural people should have more weight than the votes of urban people. Why? Maybe it should be one person, one vote.

>the votes of rural people should have more weight
That would be a weighted proportional system. Votes under the current system aren't 'weighted', since they're not all going into the same pool. Your vote never goes further than your own constituency. All constituencies are held as equal in the Commons, that's the difference
>Maybe it should be one person, one vote
It is one person, one vote. The difference between PR and the existing system is what that vote is actually meant to decide

Yeah, they're decent all-round knives, especially if you get a good one with a solid or forged handle. Japs know how to make a blade. You can do almost everything with them. I have a couple I use for practically everything at home. You can't do all the fancy stuff with them but they get the job done quick and easy.
I'd recommend getting a decent filleting knife and cleaver if you prepare your own meat at home.

You said you didn't like the idea of a popular vote deciding things because urban areas would have lots of power. Well if they do then they do. The alternative is to give rural votes more weight (which is effectively what happens in the US due to the design of the electoral college) but I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do.
>The difference between PR and the existing system is what that vote is actually meant to decide
I think PR makes sense to be honest. If 30% of the country votes for a party, then give that party 30% of the seats in parliament. Instead of giving them 60% of the seats from 30% of the vote. Or 1% of the seats from 15% of the vote.

Yields are at 5.5% now under Labour. They've gone up slowly and spiked in the last month or so. Under Truss they went to 5%, there was massive outrage and they got rid of her. The rates are literally worse now and projected to get much worse. Insulate yourself, don't hold GBP, hold another currency. USD if you have to, gold ETF's to maintain buying power, BTC if you want to outperform inflation (you get safe harbour from our inflation + international inflation). Good luck fren.

>because urban areas would have lots of power
The problem is with the corollary to that; that rural (or even just less densely populated urban areas) are subjected to the wants and whims of the most heavily densely populated areas. For example, in a truly proportional Westminster, Greater London alone would have a say greater than all of Wales and Scotland combined. I do not believe that the majority of GL's residents even really understand the political concerns of Wales and Scotland, less still that they would factor those concerns into their own voting decisions. I think instead the inevitable tendency would just be to maximise resource allocation to the densest population zones, and neglect less densely populated zones.
>The alternative is to give rural votes more weight
Again, we already have a system which instead works by effectively representing a land division, and each division carries equal power in the Commons. And those divisions are largely agnostic to population density. Carrying on with the prior example; Scotland and Wales between them have 89 Westminster constituencies at present, Vs GL's 75. If there were a mass exodus from London tomorrow, that proportion wouldn't change. GL wouldn't get more seats to compensate for reduced population size
>If 30% of the country votes for a party, then give that party 30% of the seats in parliament.
Which means that parties only have to consider, and appeal to, the concerns of the densest population zones if they want to keep their seats

Yeah he's right, it's going to get much worse regardless of who's in. It already is.
Even if Restore does a Milei and takes a chainsaw to the state the economy, and by extension the Pound, is going to tank in comparison. It's just a matter of degree, how bad will it be? Get out of the GBP while you can, just buy something that's denomitated in anything but GBP. If, _if_, everything turns out ok you can still convert it back, if SHTF then you've insulated yourself from the currency collapse.
