I think one of the reasons the West was more economically successful than the East in the 19th and 20th centuries, and possibly further back too, is that the West has been better at juicing their own lower classes. This might even go all the way back to when the Roman Empire was split into the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire.
