Elon Musk and other corporate executives have been making visits to Oregon recently. Despite the state's high taxes and business-hostile environment, it seems like tech and other firms are buying assets and land within the state. Why is that? What's the plan here?

A lot of the tech workers in these companies don't want to move away from the west coast, but they are willing to locate to the Portland/Seattle area.Yes, it's expensive to do business in Oregon and Washington, but it doesn't come anywhere close to California. I'm an attorney that represents several multinationals with operations in California. 2/3 of their global litigation/compliance expenses come from California, despite California representing a tiny fraction of their global operations.To give you an idea of how expensive it is, when you factor in litigation and compliance expenses, the cost per year per minimum wage worker is >$200,000 a year in California. In other words, that $25 per hour California employee gets paid ~$55,000 per year in salary. They then consume an additional ~$20,000 a year in health and other benefits, then an additional ~$135,000 when you evenly distribute the cost of all the lawsuits that California employees file. It's insane and literally every company that can is pulling out of the state as quickly as possible. That same employee costs ~$55,000 - $60,000 in Seattle and ~$45,000 - $50,000 in Portland.
