Many European languages have gendered nouns which dictates whether to use the masculine or feminine article (Le or La respectively in French for example). I assume that 'car' and 'ship' are feminine nouns and therefore use female pronouns. I am positive that 'man' is a masculine noun and therefore uses male pronouns.
