AI produced better quality of work than most contractual artists. I'm currently creating a video game and spent time last summer looking for an artist online and out of 100's I found maybe 5 that create artwork of commercial quality. 3 of which were not taking commissions because they were working with big studios or other projects. I'm not ready for external publishing, so for the internal test I decided to go with AI artwork for now and look into an artist at a later date. Oh and I should add, the amount of money these lesser artist ask for is outrageous. Like $50 for a bust of a character, and it looks mediocre. Meanwhile, an AI can pump out 1000's of photos with a monthly subscription at that price and they look high quality.
