Anytime there's a thunderstorm in my area, I hide inside my wardrobe and drink beer to calm myself.

People here will call you a faggot and tell you to stop being a pussy but fuck them. Phobias suck, and they are irrational by nature. Count your blessings if you don't have one.

If you're just looking to just get through it, calming medication like xanax is probably the best route. If you want to actually overcome it, exposure therapy is probably best. What is it specifically that gets you, the lightning or the thunder?

Sounds comfy anon, you don't need any help, keep doing that when there's a thunderstorm around.

Do you have a beer stash or a fridge in your wardrobe, or do you run in panic to your actual fridge first to get the beer to hide with?

The fact that I don't know where and when it will strike next, if at all. And the fact that it can go from mild grumbling to an explosion.

This. I always stack on beer when the thunderstorm season starts. I don't understand why people shill summer so much. Winter is better. No thunderstorms, no heat, no humidity, no flash flooding, snow, Christmas and cold that can easily be remedied by wearing an extra layer of clothing.

Is it specifically that lack of knowledge/control, or is it the lightning itself?

>the sound
Thunder is caused by the explosive expansion of air after lightning strikes. It's volume is mostly dependent on how far away the strike was, and although it can be loud enough to vibrate the house, it is quite literally just sound and poses no threat to you. Constantly remind yourself of that. It's just sound, and it's not dangerous. If it's not something you think you can talk yourself through, I'd recommend using earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones during a storm.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not qualified to help with phobias, but I have comforted my nephew, who also hates thunderstorms, during them.

Use your phobia to your advantage and confront your fear of death

All a phobia is is your brain signaling getting all fucked up and it making it seem that something that has a very low chance of killing you is an immediate threat to your life.

So the glass half empty outlook is that something benign (lighting happening far away while you are safe in a house) is making you shit your pants and look like a pussy infront of others.

But the glass half full outlook is you now get to experience how your body reacts in the face of immediate danger/death while being safe so you can now start trying to train yourself to have greater control in such situations.

>How do I get rid of astraphobia
Its weird but why should you get ris of it? If you can live with it, who cares. Because others said so? Only reason would be if you have Kids / family. Lol. How? Therapy i guess.

They're loud and a strike near you can be extremely loud. How can that help you sleep?

Have you considered putting on headphones and listening to loud music during a thunderstorm? It feels like that might help.
