>>534925713Don't bring that "fight" up. One of the biggest let-downs in modern history.
>>534934215There are a lot of other contenders for that title. But I think the biggest problem with the current approach to mech design is the obsession with using the same systems used in construction equipment. Too much metal, too much hydraulics. It's all too heavy and that's why they can't move fast enough to make a fight entertaining. They need to start building some mechs out of plastic or carbon fiber or something. They'd be less durable, but if they focus on ranged weapons they can just stay away from the enemy and go fast.
Somebody made a duplicate of this thread, how about that? I guess this is pretty important after all.
>>534924878Can this thing actually carry enough mass to armor or arm it? Can it move in uneven terrain or will it just trip? This is interesting, but unlikely to amount to anything YET. It could be a precursor to a lot of cool things, though.
>>534935480Got no idea about the carrying capacity, but it doesn't look like it's intended for combat use. It's tall and doesn't use tank treads or 4 wheels on the bottom, it'll tip over the first time it encounters a stiff breeze.
>>534926494You're a fucking retard. The knees are the worst possible place to put guns at all, not to mention something as retarded as a machine gun on each. >>534935572I know it isn't made for combat use, obviously, I'm wondering about the tech behind it. If it can't support carrying heavy weights it won't be useful for combat or industrial applications, making it very questionable. And if it can't handle difficult terrain it serves no purpose over tracked or wheeled vehicles.
>>534935619It doesn't have to be a fucking autocannon that would kneecap the thing with the recoil. You don't need that to take out a drone, a personal-sized SMG/PDW would do it.

The fuckers don't need arms at all, just eye tracking linked to pintle-mount weapons. WTF is a mech going to do with arms? Get you a coffee? Hold another weapon but with a higher chance of scraping walls? Fuck that. The legs can do the talking when they kick walls down and create new rooftop entrances in wheeled vehicles.Barring cybernetics, some sort of system that translates human leg movements into the mech's would work. Just keep the arms free for working electronics, or freeing yourself. And when these fuckers collapse they better collapse into defensible bunkers.
and again the only military purpose for these legged monstrosities (initially) would be civilian pacification where your greatest weapon is abject terror
>>534951308I see you're from the AT-ST school of mech design. Might be interesting to see a version of Kuratas with both arms stripped off and replaced with just guns mounted to the side.
I like how he had no leg room, then the shot cuts and he has leg roomMost totally not AI thing I've seen all day
>>534951636LOL he was actually doing pretty good for a second there.
Why does it start tipping over after hitting the styrofoam blocks?
>>534951517Those kuratas look cool but they don't look like they really fill a niche yet. With four wheels and mech thinking I would make those legs all pivot really really easily so you have something mobile: the mythical strafing tank, moving laterally but presenting front-armor only. Then you can simplify the turret too
>>534948286You don't look hard and precise enough https://bulgarov.com/blackphoenix_d1.html
>>534951929I think Kuratas could use some more wheels. Its top speed is only about 5 mph; you should double up on the wheels currently on each foot and then put another, larger wheel behind both of the smaller wheels for a total of 8 small wheels and 4 large wheels. You'd get better ground contact that way; that should at least double the top speed. You could also redo the legs so the front legs are further apart than the back or vice versa so it could turn more easily. And if you want a strafing mech, just replace the normal wheels with omniwheels/Mecanum wheels.
Planetside 2 for whatever reason gave the factions all radically different main battle tanks. The best one was probably the Vanu's since it could strafe. The next best one was New Conglomerate's since it was a normal tank. The Terran Republic got the worst tank (in terms of taking on enemy armor) since it had two turrets both at half power, requiring the PILOT (since the pilot controlled the main turret TOO always for whatever retarded reason ffs) to fire once, hit the mark, have the aim jolted, and then aim again, fire, and hit again, to keep up with the enemy tanks. But fuck that just load in HE and go killing infantry with the stupid TR tank.>the terran republic problem: more bullets = more demands for aim = longer time to kill

>>534952219This is actually a good example of how a modified Kuratas leg design might look. Just add wheels on the feet with the configuration I describe here >>534952234
>>534952589Sonic Adventure 2 already had a bunch of levels like this though? Unless you want to go full Shadow the Hedgehog and make an entire game out of it.
>>534952234Yeah I would re-design the whole thing from scratch. Sling the cockpit as low as it gets, the hydraulic suspension can stay for rough terrain, or when you need to shoot over cover. The guns go at the top when cover is part of your armor, normal tanks get this right. An arm might be useful to shoot around walls, actually. The whole point of it would be to pop out of cover, deliver some fire, and then dip in cover and reposition. An armored vehicle that can fight like infantry, effectively. You just always need cameras on the gun for this, and on wheeled designs I would keep separate gunner/pilot roles. Controlling a tank that moves in any direction would require some novel controls and I would explore ball treads as well. The balls only need to impel force in one direction, but swivel freely in any direction. This would build redundancy too, you always need redundancy in things that take a beating.
But can it survive FPV drones?
>>534924878That's kinda cool though. How shit is the battery life?
>>534924878well its about god damn time we started using exo-suits
The only usecase I can think of is crowd control.
>>534924878Looks goofy. And they couldn't even design a proper cockpit. Instead they just have that shitty roll cage
>>534925891He literally does it in the video, retard
>>534952873Good countermeasures to drones should exist but it isn't seemingly rolled out in current conflicts, maybe because they don't want it to be captured, maybe budget reasons.Every tank made this day forward should have a mini-GAU8 on a swivel that's programmed to automatically take out any flying bomb.
>>534952653
>>534952786>hydraulic suspensionI'm iffy about hydraulics, they're heavy as fuck and slow you down a lot. I'd replace as many systems as possible with cables. It's also important to have it be able to stand up because that makes it easier to get over rubble. Unless you want to give it a bulldozer scoop or something to move rubble out of the way, but that would mean more weight. Basically if a mech can't move at least 25-30 mph it's always going to be useless because mechs can never have the same amount of armor in front as a tank due to form factor, so a mech has to be able to dodge and run away.
>>534952589Eggman is more like a road kill type of man
>>534952724Yeah.Improve the controls(polish hovering and FCS), add mech customization and challenging boss battles. The antagonist could be rival weapons weapons manufacturers and Eggman is trying to protect his reputation and prove his weapons are still the best.(ignore the super-powered hedgehog)
>>534953309At this point I like the concept of the experimental armored vehicle that just delivers gunfire from an arm while hiding behind cover. That's basically the only other use for mechs I can think of. Put a railgun on top of one, and then it slowly raises up on its legs until it can identify a target. I would send them to hilly terrain in quagmire sorts of conflicts. The USA has money to do shit like this. Inventing a better newer plane that can do EVERYTHING is probably much much much more expensive than trying to explore unfilled niches. All these first-world machines are designed to work in tandem so making truly new niche devices that WORK is how you'll get an edge in any war.
>>534924878Why does it look so gay?
>>534954019A railgun as a shoulder cannon on top of Kuratas like Metal Gear REX would kick ass, it totally goes with the aesthetic and would be useful too.>I would send them to hilly terrain in quagmire sorts of conflicts. The problem with hilly terrain is that a mech is taller than a tank and more likely to roll over on a hill, but Kuratas can squat down if it has to. People also need to start considering the fact that a mech of that size is light enough to be airlifted by a cargo helicopter, while only the biggest transport planes in the world can haul tanks in extremely small numbers and they need a runway to take off or land. Choppers could just drop a Kuratas wherever, including the top of a hill. It could also use grapplers to tow itself up a hill.
>>534943116It’s unmanned
>>534954452Warfare is basically now "who can see each other first" aka "jack in the box warfare"The whole design thought process behind tanks is that they're as low to the ground as possible and the first thing the enemy sees (the first thing they can shoot at) is the turret on top. Letting these machines raise and lower themselves exploits this feature of war. If they can actually manage difficult terrain (jagged hills) then you're in the fucking MONEY. Destroy a high value target, and then reposition before the artillery fire comes rolling in where you were squatting.
>>534953141It’s been five years of slav execution videos, even the jews can intercept hezbullah drones, surely if there is an effective counter measure we would have seen it by now, not to mention it would need an >90% interception rate to be viable since the drones keep getting cheaper.
>>534954694>Get mech>Install collapsible stilts on the feet>?????>Profit?DESU more military vehicles should have periscopes, they shouldn't just be for submarines. I don't think I've ever heard of a tank having a periscope.
>>534954814Truly effective AA countermeasures now have to be deployed in these overlapping shells on a massive front. I think the Ukrainians have parts of this system pictured here but it's incomplete and so nowhere near as effective. That or they have a massive front and just can't deploy it all over. The Jews have an iron dome to protect against large missiles but their only answer to say mortar fire is return fire. Drones looks like a similar story. The Iron Dome is basically only patriot missiles for only the biggest missiles shot at them.>>534954905Anything with proper chicken-style legs can stop moving moving and just raise itself up while stationary. Railguns would be best for this since they have "no recoil." A main battle tank turret would just topple the fucks over comically.
>>534955151Heavy railguns have a shitton of recoil. A mech would probably anchor itself to the ground to fire a weapon like that, like an artillery piece.
>>534955383>Some erroneous work has suggested that the recoil force in railguns can be redirected or eliminated; careful theoretical and experimental analysis reveals that the recoil force acts on the breech closure just as in a chemical firearmOh I see I'm wrong here. Lasers are different.
>GYROJETS
>>534955551Now if only railguns themselves weren't a total meme weapon. It'll probably be some sort of pulsed-ignition combustion gun. But actually it'll be vertical launch missile tubes on the mech's back because you don't need to anchor the mech to the ground and make it vulnerable to use those.
>>534938746that helmet is fucking retarded>you thought ruck marches in basic were bad for your spine? well check this out, we made power armor with NO SUPPORT FOR FIFTY POUNDS OF METAL on your neck! AND you go into combat with that shit!i know it's just comic art but i would fire that retard
>>534956032Gyrojets "don't have recoil">Gyrojet that were tested were inaccurate, cumbersome, slow loading, and unreliable. At best, a 1% failure rate was suggested; users quote worse figures, with many rounds that misfired the first time but later firedYou might as well go with a real rocket and all you need for a rocket launcher is a human which has all the advantages of a miniaturized mech and few if any of the downsides.Lasers might be worth exploring with mechs since the fuckers will be carting around giant batteries anyway. Maybe it's just not practical at all... except for sheer terror.

>>534956032The future of the tech is most likely smaller projectiles more like traditional bullets, using the sheer energy driving them to deal damage. The car-sized meme railguns melting concrete walls are cool to watch, but not practical. A scaled down version that can penetrate tank armor and is mounted to a vehicle or even man-portable would actually be practical. Didn't some woman in India or China or somewhere around there solve the portable superconductor problem a while back? I remember reading something about magnetics-based floating vehicles and that being the last obstacle.
>>534924878Fortunately, chinese tech usually just ends up being drone worker slaves rather than weaponized for anything

Not positive if they were designed explicitly for use in space, but I remember reading about them years back while looking at various failed meme weapon designs, they were very seriously pitching the tech as an early form of weaponry for warfare in space. This was what? The late 90's or early 2000's? They really thought it was close.
Egg-shaped.

Just saw a random thread while looking into this again, OP suggested using them for things like launching grappling hooks for use in debris reclamation or eventual mining operations in asteroid fields, on a scaled up version of the existing models. Can you imagine space pirates using rocket powered harpoons that self-oxidize to grab the victim ship? Fuck, it could be repurposed as a form of emergency propolsion.
