Everything was going more or less smoothly in East Asia, at least between China, Korea and Japan until Japanese decided they could relinquish their Asian culture, join the Western civilization, which could empower them enough to attack their kin, colonize them, erase their culture and replace it with foreign values and principles. Needless to say, they failed and instead of acknowledging their treacherous act they doubled down on being vassals of the West and doing their bidding in Asia. As of now they have realized they will never be able to achieve dominance in Asia, but at the same time they are too bitter to allow China to become an actually self-sufficient Asian power not poisoned by Western civilization. So, they are doing everything they can to undermine them out of sheer spite. They play a significant role in dividing Chinese people between China and Taiwan too just because they cannot stand the idea of China becoming whole. Japan will never forgive China for succeeding where they failed.
