Think of how Germany was splintered into many principalities and how politically inconsequential each of these were. Only after unifying the Germany people under one country did it become a significant regional power. The same concept applies to EU member states. Acting alone, they are weak. When united, they can exert significant global influence. A right-wing, militarized Europe could potentially become a contemporary Roman Empire.
