I’ll take a serious shot at your problem. You could first point out that he’s asking you to make an appeal to an higher authority rather than your personal judgement. But what is the basis he would accept any source’s authority? Wouldn’t that take a personal judgment of his own? And what would stop someone from asking for a source, then a source for his source, then a source for his source, etc. Where does authority begin? No matter how far back you go you’re always ending up with some other human being’s personal judgment. Someone had to make the first judgment. And why trust that one?Of course this is an appeal to him to argue in good faith, which would only work if he was surrounded by people he was worried of looking stupid in front of.
