It doesn't really solve the problem. The area is really poor. There's no money. Industry that used to exist has mostly been exported to China/ India/ Mexico / etc. The geography of the mountains makes the region economically less wealthy because mountains act as barriers to trade and reduce useable land. What does the Union solve here? It's good for the members of the Union but how does it solve actual community issues?My uncle was in a big time, you've heard of it Union for decades. And you know what? It got him paid a little more on some of his jobs but the vast majority of people in the region aren't in unions. They don't get the benefit. And in many cases actual unions can gang up and operate more like organized crime. Where membership in the union is capped and the union is used to keep people OUT so the current members make more money. They're not altruistic in the way Marxist theory might suggest.
