The reality is that there's no population that's equipped to handle a preponderance of elderly, who are not suited for the workforce (although they still occupy low-level jobs meant for teens), and who need constant supervision and aid. The problem has never been a lack of kids, at least not in absolute terms. The problem has always been the elderly to baby ratio. Or in other words, countries collapse when there are too many old people. They take up too many resources and produce too little, and the politics sway in their favor which results in disproportionate resource allocation to take care of them. This isn't even a liberal democracy problem. It happens at the familial level, too. Think about what happens when you have grandparents that live too long. They can't work, and they can't take care of themselves, and they need the constant attention and care that only two generations can provide. Kids and parents need to take care of grandparents in shifts of rotation. It slows down the workforce. It makes it harder for kids to go out and get married, because they inevitably move out. Or in the case of the eldest son, who often inherits the home and responsibilities, it becomes the responsibility of the eldest son and his new wife to take care of the grandparents. The old living too long has been recognized as a problem by any advanced society throughout history. Like the fucking ancient Greeks wrote about old age with, essentially, disgust.
