It wasn't protecting anything specific, thus it didn't serve as a delay for anything. Once it's crossed, every direction on the other side is open for an invader to move, and at any time. It's just a shit means of delaying, a shit means of force multiplication, a mediocre means of signalling that an invasion is happening at a certain point that doesn't hold anyone there long enough to make that information useable, it just looks impressive because it is large. They could have improved 100 cities with further fortifications that actually served to delay and kill mongols with half the efforts placed into building that wall to that size. Would have been much better return for the efforts.

>>535074164That wasn't what it was built to do. It was to discourage raiding. If your frontier is constantly being raided by nomadic tribes, then it is functionally unusable. Walls don't stop castles or cities from getting captured by a determined force. No one expected the great wall to stop a full blown invasion, either.
