I think it is psychologically interesting to visit a country that is on a meteoric rise trajectory in terms of quality of life of its citizens. Being an "old stock" Canadian, I was born into a country in steep decline. All of the large public-good civic projects that were completed for the 1967 centennial (bandstands in parks, large public buildings, train stations etc.) are in the end-stages of decay, kept only barely functional for a few more years at best. I know nothing new or better will ever be built here. Conversely, a Chinese 35 year old could have been born in a village with little to no electricity, but now is ferried by bullet train through a gleaming city. His lungs wre once assailed by diesel fumes, but now most cars and factories are running on green solar electricity. It would be interesting to sit down for tea with my counterpart in China and talk about how our experiences differ.
