I got my ass beat and it just made me learn to hide things better and not tell my parents anything. I grew out of it eventually but getting smacked for not doing homework that I never understood and the teacher wouldn't help me with did do a number on my psyche.

What i dont agree with is trying to smack your kid every time they say something that you dont like.
