Without fire, prehistoric humans huddled under rocks or took shelter in caves when the sun set. Unable to see shit in the pitch darkness, your small tribe would be powerless to defend against sabertooth tigers, dire wolves, and a myriad of other predators. Early man didn't know much, but as each person saw the sun disappearing over the horizon every evening, they knew they were in big trouble. At some point 400,000-500,000 years ago, a lightning strike must have set a tree on fire. A curious individual would have wandered over, and after some observation might have picked up a burning branch, discovering fire was hot as fuck but also provided illumination. After experimenting, he learned how to keep that fire going. It was at that point that the curious individual became the first King, Priest, and Scientist, for he had knowledge nobody else had.He would keep the fire going into the night, and other humans would gravitate towards the glow. The secret of it gave him power over the others who would submit to his authority in exchange for being allowed to enjoy the safety & warmth the fire provided. He would create rituals around the fire, and select worthy candidates to share the secret of it, passing it down through generations, continuing to use it to control the masses. Therefore Secret Societies have been with us since the beginning.
