Basically because the Dutch and French landed first but couldn't find any civilisation, and civilised people to trade with, any natives fit to work on plantations or any valuable resources. The Dutch colonised Indonesia and the French colonised laos and Indochina instead. Why did the British come here? It's a good question. Firstly the British send explorers to map the entire coastline and botanists to survey the wildlife, so they found arrive regions and significant indigenous populations in the south. They also found valuable pine trees in Tasmania which were worth logging and using for ship building. And because Britain had a problem with the capacity of their prisons, they decided to reinforce the minor logging colonies in Australia with convicts. And then after the California gold rush was burning out, prospectors found alluvial gold in Australia triggering the gold rush that actually made Australia a county, and triggered the independent colonies (which weren't even states) to throw the British out and form a country.
