PSA sometimes has bundle deals where you can get a rifle and a pistol together with a few mags. PSA AR15's aren't the best but they're not shitty by any means especially for a beginner. The PSA dagger is the pistol that's usually in the bundle, it's a glock clone. Haven't heard anything bad about those and they're cheaper than Glocks. Use that money saved for range time and ammo.

Everyone wants to get a gun for home defense but nobody wants to invest in cameras, lights, fences, dogs, any of the stuff that actually keeps people away from your house in the first place. Before you buy the gun, get some motion activated flood lights. Make sure they light up every inch of your yard any time anything bigger than a medium size dog steps foot on your property. Then, get some cameras. Make sure they can alert you any time someone is within a few feet of your property. Put up no trespassing and beware of dog signs. Get a good light for your porch and driveway, so anyone that comes “soliciting” (casing the joint) has their face lit up like a billboard. Get a fence. Get a big, scary dog. Actually, get two. I don't know shit about guns. Handgun would a better start.
Start with a 9mm carbine and a 9mm revolver. That's a nice round to handle for s beginner and you only have to support one. Snub nosed pistol is great for concealed carry and point blank defense. The carbine gives you nice range and penetration characteristics for an urban rifle. An AR15 is more expensive to buy and operate and has a lethal range of up to 500 yards or more. This is a repellent/deterrent rifle. It will convince a small group of youths to retreat at 100 yards. Move up to the AR later if you like. You could also get a Glock style 9mm but those are more complicated than pistols for a casual beginner. The pistol will just work. Semiautomatics take more skill to operate successfully.
