How do we return to society that is centered around and benefits working middle-aged people (i.e. the people who actually keep it together) rather than a society that caters to shrivelling ancients at their expense?

By abandoning democracy.
An inherent flaw of democracy is that it must cater to the voting population. Parties have to be popular to be voted. More often than not, the popular choice is the right call. However many times the right decision is extremely unpopular with the population.
The political parties have to cater to to all kinds of people to be electable and can not fully implement a good program. This gets exacerbated with media propaganda where the population is gaslit into believing terrible policies are actually good for them.
Because of this you get optic cucking.
Parties cater to boomers because the largest voting block is old people. They don't want to risk not making it into the government.
