I started reading Gibbon's History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire yesterday afternoon. While I'm only halfway through the book, I can already say that it's well worth a read. My only criticism is he doesn't go into enough detail into the economic history of the Roman Empire. He could have easily written another four volumes on this topic.

It's about this Jap prisoner of war camp and King rat masters his environment and does a lot of amazing things one would not think possible in such a setting. Now once after he is liberated he is worse than nothing. It blew me away the way author wrote as if he truly understood such a paradox.
