Space exploration is how we’ll get out of the debt spiral. We don’t need a deflation crisis, we just need a huge new market to soak up capital.

explorers on earth had patrons like royalty that would fund their expeditions
if they came back having found nothing returning the investment it was a failure
we don't know everything in the system or about it obviously but we know enough to know there's nothing we know of that we can't get or refine from here for waaaay cheaper

even minerals and elements that are worth a shit ton now are only worth that because of relative rarity or difficulty/cost of refinement
if you found some asteroid that was solid diamond and the size of manhattan it would end up being worth exponentially less because it would utterly tank the diamond market

>but we know enough to know there's nothing we know of that we can't get or refine from here for waaaay cheaper
That threshold shifts as soon as we have a permanent off-earth base, and the ROI after that is enough for a serious speculator to justify early investment

not entirely wrong, quick bump

One gold asteroid sinks the world economy

>the ROI after that is enough for a serious speculator to justify early investment
the setup and overhead are so massive that it's this super long term investment exceeding the lifetime of the investors most likely, so very hard to get interest, and there's still this problem >>535418198 of negatively impacting the markets via supply flood, so you could only be artificially fixing the values OPEC style drip releasing from enormous stockpiles, so the shipment costs wouldn't murder you
you'd be creating another offworld market as well but it wouldn't be anywhere near the size or revenue stream of the earth market

the only real plus is there actually IS an existential crisis involved no matter how far in the future it actually is, where sol destroys the planet and nearly all evidence we even existed, so going offworld somehow at some point is a survival necessity, and the elite know this (if it's even true, who can say anymore)
