It seems that the new thing now is to tell everyone to get a trade and just say the hell with college. I'm all for anyone getting a trade or attending courses towards a degree, but what I don't understand is why the two pathways are considered adversarial. I had a blast back in college but the minute they were asking for more money, I dropped out. Fast forward to 2026, and "experts" are now saying "Just get a trade". As if it's a band-aid to fix the downward slope of Academic ability in America. Why is college not worth it anymore? Why is Education so undervalued in America? What the hell happened?

Colleges are apparently where 'you learn to self teach'. Dude, you can do that right from the get-go. College is just a part of a gate-keeping cartel. Go pass the bar exam, USMLE, CFA, CPA for fun cause none of them are difficult. Just walk in from the street bare feet, with no shirt on. Destroy the exams with both hands tied behind your back and blindfolded. Do you think they will give you a job? LMAO. They will just tell you you ain't got the papers. It is meant to protect those who are already inside. Papered up and linked up.
If you go trades go union, pipefitter or commercial electrical. If you want small ball and working for yourself become a plumber or a residential electrician. Residential electrical is pretty gay ass work though, you'll spend whole days dicking around with stupid light fixtures with your hands above your head. But even tilers, framers and drywallers are going to be able to get by just fine, though that is not the kind of work you want to do past 40. Whatever trade you end up with spend 6 months or a year working for an old school General Contractor so you can get your ass kicked and see houses come together, you'll know the work flow of a full job and you'll experiment with enough different tasks that you will get a good sense of what you like and don't like doing.
