PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: THE HIDDEN DANGER OF THE ALPHA-GAL TICK

You could develop a life-threatening allergy to red meat—not from food, but from a tick bite.

Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is a serious, potentially fatal allergy triggered by the bite of certain ticks, primarily the Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum). After a bite, some people develop an immune response to a sugar molecule called galactose-α-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) found in mammalian meat like beef, pork, and lamb. Reactions occur 3–6 hours after eating red meat and can include hives, swelling, vomiting, severe stomach pain, anaphylaxis, and even cardiac symptoms—which affect 30–40% of AGS patients.

This is not a minor allergy. AGS is long-term, with no cure. The only treatment is strict avoidance of red meat and other products containing alpha-gal, including some medications and gelatin. In 2025, a New Jersey case marked the first known death directly linked to AGS, confirming its life-threatening potential.

The fear is growing because these ticks are spreading fast. Once confined to the southern U.S., Lone Star ticks are now thriving in Massachusetts, Long Island, and beyond—driven by climate change and milder winters. Cases are rising on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Suffolk County. Even more alarming, new research shows that Ixodes ticks—known for spreading Lyme disease—may also transmit AGS, expanding the risk across the Northeast and Midwest.

With as many as 450,000 Americans possibly affected, and the 2026 tick season projected to be one of the worst on record, prevention is critical.

Protect yourself:

Use EPA-approved repellents like DEET or picaridin on skin.
Treat clothing and gear with permethrin—a proven insecticide that kills ticks on contact.
Permethrin-treated clothing offers 100% protection and lasts through multiple washes.
Avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter.
Check your body, clothing, and pets for ticks after being outdoors.
Remove ticks early—studies show risk increases the longer a tick feeds.
Massachusetts has declared AGS a reportable condition as of April 2026, signaling the urgency of this emerging threat.

Don’t wait. A single tick bite could change your life forever. Prevent bites. Know the symptoms. Save your health.
