After a bite, some people develop an immune response to a sugar molecule called galactose-α-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) found in mammalian meat like beef, pork, and lamb. Reactions occur 3–6 hours after eating red meat and can include hives, swelling, vomiting, severe stomach pain, anaphylaxis, and even cardiac symptoms—which affect 30–40% of AGS patients.This is not a minor allergy. AGS is long-term, with no cure. The only treatment is strict avoidance of red meat and other products containing alpha-gal, including some medications and gelatin. In 2025, a New Jersey case marked the first known death directly linked to AGS, confirming its life-threatening potential.The fear is growing because these ticks are spreading fast.
