Its because the foundation of evangelicalism itself is rotten. The SBC split off before the Civil War due to the issue of slavery, as a result they dumbed down their theology as much as possible. The sole purpose of the Baptist Church became to prevent slave uprisings and keep people in line and from challenging the system, so they encouraged worshiping authority. Modern Evangelicalism is a descendant of this "slave Christianity," which encouraged authoritarianism and forgiving leaders for their degenerate behavior.
