No smearing of the vaginal mucus onto the baby's face as it is born which is crucial for immune development.The umbilical cord is clamped immediately after birth, preventing the large bolus of blood and nutrients. The bolus is crucial for the development and health of the newborn as well as for chemical bonding of mother and baby. The bolus also stabilizes the baby's breathing and makes the transition to using its lungs to breathe easier and less traumatic.After the baby is cleaned up they take it away to the nursery. The baby is not placed on the mother's chest or in her arms for emotional bonding. They are separated immediately and for the remainder of their stay until discharge they are kept separate for most of the time. Discharge is usually 5-10 days after birth.
