NH legislature passed SB557 – "synthetic kratom" ban.
Their definition: any alkaloid made by "enzymatic techniques" or "processes that confer a structural change".

That's literally what your liver does.
CYP3A4 enzyme converts mitragynine 7‑OH. Happens in 15 minutes. Required for pain relief.

Rep. Sweeney on the floor:

"Kratom is like a poppy seed bagel. Synthesize it and it becomes a bad drug."
"7‑OH is deadly."
"But pain relief products are still good."

2024 Mongar study (ACS journal):

7‑OH is a natural human metabolite, not a synthetic.
Humans convert mitragynine to 7‑OH 9x more efficiently than rats.
7‑OH has reduced β‑arrestin‑2 recruitment respiratory depression is MUCH lower than heroin/morphine.

Sweeney's contradiction:
He says 7‑OH is "deadly" but "pain relief products are still good". Those products only work because your body produces 7‑OH.

The bill has NO exemption for in vivo metabolism.
Strict reading = drinking kratom tea makes you a Schedule II felon for manufacturing and possessing. Constructive possession doctrine = your own bloodstream counts.

What you can do right now (yes, anonymous works):

Email the Senate Rules and Enrolled Bills Committee – they review the bill before it goes to the Governor. Tell them to send it back for rewrite.
