Explosion in Hellersdorf apartment - woman injured, police arrest two men

A mysterious incident triggered a large-scale deployment of firefighters and police on Friday evening in Berlin-Hellersdorf. Around 19:35 a powerful explosion shook an apartment building on Quedlinburger Strasse. According to preliminary findings, the detonation occurred in an apartment on the fifth floor.
The Berlin fire brigade arrived with just under 60 emergency forces. At first, however, the firefighters could not enter the building. "On the advice of the police, we could not enter the house at first," explained a spokesman. The background was an unclear hazard situation at first. Special police forces were then called to the scene.
Shortly later, responders rescued an injured woman from the affected apartment. She was given medical care on site and subsequently taken to the accident hospital Berlin (UKB). According to initial findings, the gas cartridge of a camping gas cooker had exploded. The pressure wave pushed window panels and parts of the frames up to 30 meters.

According to police, the material of the building remained intact. Therefore, an evacuation of the house was not necessary. The apartment was vacated again after the completion of the operation.
According to information on the scene, officials arrested two men with large amounts of cash being found. Whether the men are connected to the explosion is currently unclear and the subject of investigation. Both were later re-sacked.
A spokesperson for the camp service initially confirmed an arrest. According to information from the place of action, one of the men is supposed to be the tenant of the affected apartment.
The State Criminal Office (LKA) took over the investigations and trace protection at the crime scene in the evening. The exact reasons behind the explosion are still open.
