I wouldn't call them one of humanity's great civilizations. They never had the reach or the influence of the Roman Empire or the Persians or the British, the cultural impact of the Greeks or Egyptians, and they weren't foundational like the Mesopotamians. They didn't even have a state for most of their existence as a group, so they can't claim any kind of continuity in the way the Chinese can.They are tenacious, and they've survived some extremely coordinated attempts to wipe them out, but nothing about the Jewish people screams greatness to me. Even now, they're not powerful, they're clinging to the skirt of an empire in the way they always did. Rome, Egypt, Britain, America, they're only ever notable in the interactions they have with larger powers.When I think of Jews I think of survival, fragmentation, dispossession.
