You constantly see the trope in American movies of some rich guy threatening to sue someone and this is seen as a grave threat. I thought that Americans could get a public lawyer in disputes but this only applies to when they are a defendant accused of a crime. In Finland low-income people are issued public lawyers in disputes and the losing party has to pay his fees (and the fees of the judge and court secretaries and clerks and utilities of the courthouse) so it's not even a drain on taxpayer money unless the destitute party loses the dispute.

If you have to get a state appointed defense attorney, you've already lost. Also only prosecutors are actual lawyers.

I sue and get sued all the time. I use corporate lawyers which cost hundreds of thousands per case, but you can hire a single lawyer practice for under $10k per case. I always sue for legal fees as well, and this requires extra hearings which cost tens of thousands themselves. Then you have to collect the judgment and this requires hiring a law firm to garnish their assets. And when they transfer their assets to someone else's name you have to sue both of them. Then they can challenge the underlying judgment to get a stay, and they can appeal when they lose if they're able to file a supersedeas bond. They can also request reversals and reviews. This shit drags out for years and costs millions.
