US funding really ramped up in the 80s, it was like 5 billion a year. Israel had over 100% inflation in those days and massive capital flight, the country could not afford to import oil, grains and the weaponry for so many wars. Without that support it would have spiraled downwards with capital flight scaring everyone into getting out while they could. Things calmed down thanks to the late 80s oil glut and military support to replace all our hardware losses.
