Until someone on reddit posts about how to cure cancer or aids or finds free energy, no LLM will find out how. The core problem is that LLMs are based on connectivist AI concepts, create neural net and throw data at it until it recognises patterns. These result in software that is good at recognizing patterns and duplicating them but can't create anything that isn't a statistical average of the data sets it was fed. Symbolic AIs (aka ruleset AIs) require a lot of human effort to create an AI with "intuition" or a set of rules that it can follow to create new answers. Unfortunately Symbolic AIs are massively labor intensive and require people who are experts in their field interatively improve the rules so that the AI becomes smarter. LLMs can become 'smarter' by a combination of throwing more data at them or by increasing the amount of processing capacity (data centers - compute) they have access to, but this is a linear increase at an exponential cost. The internet has been completely scraped of useful data so the only thing left is to double the amount of 'compute' they use. It's physically impossible for an LLM to become sentient or 'think outside the box'. Solution would be to create a hybrid Symbolic-Connectivist AI which combines a strong ruleset with a neural net fed a massive amount of data. Which would mean throwing out all the LLMs currently in use and starting over. This was known decades ago but LLMs got quick results at first, investors were mad/desperate that they missed the crypto boom so now they throw their money at "AI" hoping to get rich.
