The cost of the energy.

Most people can afford at least one or two these window units that will cool a large living room, but they can't afford to run them all day, or they get an astronomical electricity bill.
Germans rightfully see AC as a waste of money because it's rare for them to experience temperatures higher than 30ºC.

I've got two of these portable ACs but rarely run them unless the heat gets pretty bad, and only in the hottest hours of the day or if I've got visitors.

Real gooks are actually terrified of these things, unlike anyone else (except maybe other asians). Northern western Europe's power grid just can't cope with everyone having them so their politicians rationalize it as fighting the climate change or whatever instead of trying to fix it. Apparently the same is true in New York so Amerikwans really shouldn't be smug about it.
>>
>>538322748
There's another coming
>>
>>538322974
Yeah, this is exactly what I wanted to get at. This is exactly why North Americans pay such high rent prices.
Utilities being included in your rent means that if they have to pay your electricity, water and other utilities they'll have to overcharge you for them into oblivion.

You may as well use it because you're gonna be forced to pay for it in much higher rent prices.
Europeans get to choose if they want to pay for AC or not, for you, it's mandatory.

Personally, I wish he'd just make 'rape day' because everyone there that supports his ass deserves to be raped.

I think there's a schism in the way Americans and Euros see it. To an American, a senior citizen dying from heat is seen as avoidable. To Euros, I think they see it as natural. That it's just the way it is, if it's hot out and you've reached an age where your biology can't tolerate the natural world then it's tragic but expected.

To America... a senior citizen dying from heat or cold is seen as..... a lost revenue to the pharmaceutical and care industry.
A revenue that can no longer be exploited.
Reminder....Europe has a health care system that is mostly free....and our life expectancy is 5 years longer than Americans.

>>
>>538323896
Even if it wasn't immigrants that are needed to grow the economy because of low birth rates, it would be Americans raising the rent or housing costs if the population grew. The reason rent/houses are expensive is because little is done to make more houses available because that would cut the wealth of property owners. America is huge, we can build more properties there's plenty of space.

heating at this temp seems like a suicide
dehumidifier would be a better idea. And since dehumidifiers are just heatpumps, you might go the extra mile and install split. You can use it to dehumidify air in the fall. Although normal dehumidifier has the benefit of also being a net gain to temperature.

This is such a shit take. Do you literally never go outside? Do you control the temperature when you hiking in the woods or swimming in a lake, or is your country too hostile for that.
Nothing comfier than coming home from a hike through the snow and chill under a blanket. All the time when it is hot, I go outside, if it's too warm just jump in the water.

If for some reason the government in the US wants to keep you guys down they just cut electricity because you can't survive fluctuating temperatures.
How is that better quality of life.
(Many people own ACs here)

in europe we've got tilted windows, so window units aren't suited for those

Or hes just a lying gay frog. Geothermal is extremely expensive also it pretty much doesnt work when temps get really extreme.
>have friend whos family is rich
>have beautiful house in whitefish MT
>hurr lets do geothermal cuz muh mother earth
>blizzard comes
>hmmm wonder why the wood stove is on
>line in heat exchange field cracked and no glycol

If you are cold just get a toyostove with a build in tank. I had an RV I would heat for $1.50 a day in subfreezing winters and was comfy wumfy
>>
>>538332582
Sorry to say that new Dutch apartments are exactly the same.
I even opened my windows at -2°C because 22° was feeling a little toasty. The heaters have never been turned on. Completely redundant.
In fact today I woke up to find the thermometer indicated 29°C. It hasn't even been 29 in a week, and I've had the windows open from sundown to dawn every single night.

People talk an awful lot about the heat itself in these threads but the architects really deserve the rage.
They designed the buildings to heatmaxx for the energy rating so the renting corporation gets the best percentages on the loans required to build these prisons, and as part of that effort completely failed to install ways of getting rid of the heat.

>>
>>538332900
Nah I wouldnt recommend. Compressors prefer to be level last I checked. Its why they say let a freezer or fridge sit for 12 hours before plugin. They really dont make shit easy there. I can see why poland wants to be a US outpost. I dont blame em. German bureaucracy is hell, UK is a police state, france only gets a pass cuz they have the least cucked gun laws but its pretty much algeria in the cities.

Visiting frankfurt was like walking into another dimension of what in the fuck. Might as well rename it to Judeo-Liberalis.

>>

Agreed, houses need to breathe for longevity. I am planning on putting a metal roof on my house but want to instal a cupola to help with the venting.
>>
>>538333151
Make sure to block the sun, that's the culprit. I had a 7.2mx3m window facing the south in my apartment in Eindhoven. Basically had to keep the curtains closed all the time. Though we put the floor cooling to max that helped just a lot of condensation near the meter. Not my problem.

One question sven.....fucking why? You could buy a toyo for 3k and be done with it but in order to account for frost levels (what my friends family didnt do) you end up paying close to 20k. Unless you are close to a hot spring its a meme.
>>
>>538333047
Geothermal is pretty common here, I know several people who have it. Never heard any complains.
The only horror story I heard (by hearsay, not anyone I know), was of someone who got garden work done with machinery and forgot he had pipes underground.
It's an upfront investment, but the operating cost is much lower than an air unit.
>>
>>538333240
tilted windows can open to the side. the unit would be leveled. It's just not as easy to install as with slide windows
>>
>>538333575
electricity is expensive in yurop. you earn it back in a few years.
also, it's nowhere close to 20k. my brother paid not even half that.
>>
>>538333575
I don't have it myself so idk. Apparently it works well but they dig down like 250m which is like 700f or something? It's pricey, but yeah low electric costs, maybe the rock works well here

Its a gay meme. The A/C on my boat can run for nearly 12 hours after a day of sailing with the solar and wind.
>>
>>538333806
It will last much longer than that, and the stuff that would need replacing isn't the largest chunk of the cost, it's the weeks of drilling
>>
>>538333806
The calculus is different in yurop as i've already said. installation is cheaper, electricity is more expensive.
>>
>>538333879
>weeks of drilling
took like a single day when my brother installed it.
>>
>>538333899
Yeah installation here would be 10-20k and Sweden is not cheap for labour costs
>>
>>538322642
What if I want to suffer?
>>
>>538333944
You might find out that the "soil" is different here, at least my co worker is getting it installed and they mentioned it could take a month. They're probably messing with him though, wells are a days of drilling which is between 50-120 meter, but it could get harder at 200?
>>
>>538333977
But you already live in the UK. You mean to want to suffer even more?

Unless theres serious government subsidy the cost doesnt equal the benefit. If one of the pex lines cracks in the flooring or anywhere its gonna be at least 5k in repairs. Most home insurance doesnt cover it. Also, if homes were vented properly and there werent niggers you could have a attic vent and open windows. My grandparents house in the south just had big metal awnings on the windows and a massive fan in the central hallway going up to the vented attic and even on hot days it didnt get uncomfortable. Yes it was warm but it wasnt suffering.

>>
>>538334335
Spending 10-20k for your hot and cold installation isn't a lot, not here at least. And if you have something cheap you will pay that amount in like 5 years. Electric/gas prices are retarded here.

I use a pellet burner, automated in winter. There are some nice wood stoves including kakelugn with ceramics. But CBA to maintain that.
I also have a heat pump which is quite efficient. The pellet burner just heats up quicker and allows cooler nights which I like for sleeping.

Pellet burners are definitely more efficient. Also better for heat control. I just rather buy a cord of wood. Also when me and the kids go hiking or camping I bring a chainsaw for the backyard firepit. Im building a brick outdoor kitchen....kinda like in south america. Will be neat to make wood fired pizza. Wish it was colder here and I would 100% build a sauna too.
>>
>>538324035
Don't forget that europe is the only culture on EARTH where houses have cellars, cooling the first floor even further..
>>
>>538334696
Yeah but maintenance on the geothermal will not cost as much. And again the problem is the electrical cost. There are people getting 2k+ monthly electric bills in winter due to its price (thanks Germany), mine is typically under 300. Outside the winter months under 200 and that includes hot water, cooking etc. Not just room temperature. Though I use pellets in winter.
Geothermal would be cheaper for temperature control etc.
Also sounds like you live in an apartment and not a house? Geothermal is either for entire blocks or detached houses.
>>
>>538334781
Yeah russia was the only place I had to run AC in the winter because blyat cycka central steam combined with 20 story soviet apartment building= cook on the radiator. Dried clothes quickly however.

My late grandparents were ancient. Grandpa was born in 1906. In their house they just had this one giant fan that served as the kitchen window. It was about 3 ft wide. In the New Orleans heat they would just turn on the fan and it would circulate air throughout the whole house somehow. It was still hot, but the blowing air cooled you off a little.

Dont get me wrong, seeinf soviet city planning was super fascinating. Also very much worth pissing my gf off asking her boomer dad about how much better ussr was as my russian is barely conversational and he would go on 45 minute rants about how at least there were jobs then and ice cream parlors instead of bars and niggers.

Russia could easily be on par with the US but the corruption seems inverted there. Here corruption is mostly at the top. There its mostly local.

It wicks the sweat away, which is the trick to cooling in the heat.
Wet yourself with tap water and sit in front of a fan. You're now watercooled.

We can survive fluctuating temps, and we handled the temps in North America without AC. But we didnt like it, so when the tech came along to do something about it we put it everywhere. Like the anon said, sleeping fucking sucks in the heat. Before AC, homes in the American South used to feature what was called a sleeping a porch. That allowed people a place to basically sleep outside because it was too hot in the house to sleep.
>>
>>538332840
In the summer in the south you stay indoors from like 10 till 5 in the afternoon but thats like july and august. Then we have "second summer" from september to damn near december. Last Christmas we still had some leaves on the trees. I cant wait for the gulf stream to collapse.
>>
>>538337356
>sleeping porches
Fake and gay. Porches were a thing before electricity because well, breezes are nice in the summer. Never in my life have I ever heard of a "sleeping porch" or as you put it "sleeping a porch". Maybe you are just a porch monkey who lives on his porch.
>>
>>538337219
>I fucking swear a russian woman could find a river of turkish lira and complain its not in rubles
To be fair, depending on where you are, using that river of money would be a pain in the ass because you'd need to go to the bank to convert it. And if by this you mean that you lived in Turkey, than that's at best a sidegrade compared to Russia.
