Here in brussels nobody is celebrating. I just came out of a gay orgy in the geyropean parliament where we decided to hand over eastern europe to MIGHTY RUSSIA.
We will also be paying reparations in the form of toilets, domestic appliances, cucumbers and boipucci. The latter will be used strictly for disciplinary purposes. Russia is the grandpa of europe and all geyropean petukhs must display buttocks for punishment.
Hopefully this will stop Gerasimov's T-14 Armata Ghost Brigade on its way to lissabon.

guys patriot missiles are expensive and hard to make, will require a big investment to get the equipment to build them, which will then be vulnerable to sabotage.

is it not cheaper to make their own ballistic missiles and respond in kind 2x every time russia bombs them? if it's cheaper for russia to make ballistic missiles than it is to make patriots to stop them, then it kind of is unaffordable long term.

Ukrainian drone strikes spark fires at Russian fuel depots; evacuations reported

Ukrainian drone attacks overnight sparked fires at Russian fuel infrastructure, including an oil depot in the southern Stavropol region, forcing the evacuation of nearby residents according to local authorities and open-source intelligence.

Explosions were reported across the Stavropol region early on Thursday. Initial analysis of eyewitness footage by the independent OSINT channel ASTRA suggested an attack on a facility belonging to LUKOIL-Yugnefteprodukt, a downstream subsidiary of Russian energy giant LUKOIL, in the town of Mikhaylovsk.

However, subsequent updates and regional officials clarified that the blaze occurred at a separate industrial fuel hub in the nearby hamlet of Vyazniki, located approximately one kilometer from the LUKOIL site.

Stavropol Governor Vladimir Vladimirov initially stated that the drone raid caused a fire at an "industrial facility" and claimed there was no threat to residential areas. He later retracted this, confirming that the fire had intensified and spread to fuel storage tanks.

While Vladimirov noted that debris had fallen on Kolomiytseva Street in the regional center without causing casualties, the expanding blaze at the Vyazniki facility eventually forced authorities to evacuate residents from a neighboring street to temporary shelters.

The strike in Stavropol was part of a broader wave of overnight drone attacks across Russia. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses intercepted 73 Ukrainian drones across 11 regions. Simultaneously, an oil depot in the Tver region, northwest of Moscow, was struck, igniting a fuel reservoir, while two tankers sustained mechanical damage following drone strikes in the Taganrog Gulf.

>Zelensky goes with it and names it after UPA

>"Polish" president Nawrocki rescinds Zeleboba's Order of White Eagle, which is the highest Polish award that you can receive and demands it back
>Zeleboba does it, but sends it via regular mail which again causes those journaille parasites to cry about it
>tl;dr more fucking retarded shitstorm and top-level spitfest, I tuned out because this whole fucking shit is gay and retarded and weapons are still flowing to Ukraine and killing Ziggers so that's all that matters to me

Ukrainian drone strike ignites Russian fuel depot in Tver

A Ukrainian drone attack overnight ignited a fuel storage tank at a major oil depot in the Russian city of Tver, regional officials and independent analysts reported on Thursday.

Residents in the Tver region, located northwest of Moscow, reported hearing explosions during the early hours of July 9. Open-source intelligence group ASTRA analyzed eyewitness footage and identified the burning facility as the "Tvernefteprodukt" oil depot, a subsidiary of the Russian energy firm Surgutneftegas.

Vitaly Korolev, the acting governor of the Tver region, confirmed the strike early Thursday. He stated that a fuel reservoir at the facility caught fire "as a result of repelling a UAV attack."

Korolev, who traveled to the site to establish an operational headquarters, said that emergency services had successfully localized the blaze and reported no casualties among civilians or plant personnel.

Independent reports noted that the depot, a critical logistical hub supplying fuel to 52 gas stations across the region, had previously been fitted with anti-drone nets that failed to prevent the strike.

The incident in Tver was part of a larger, coordinated overnight drone assault by Ukraine on Russian energy infrastructure. A simultaneous drone strike sparked a severe fire and prompted civilian evacuations at a fuel facility in the southern Stavropol region.

The European Parliament on Wednesday approved an amendment that criticised Volodymyr Zelenskyy's decision to rename an elite Ukrainian military unit after the World War II-era Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a move that has sparked a diplomatic dispute with Poland.

>A large majority of MEPs voted in favor of the amendment, which expressed regret over the "recent unnecessary and unprovoked escalation" by the Ukrainian president, while recalling Poland's steadfast support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia's invasion.

>Wide support for condemnation in the Parliament
>The Parliament’s text expresses regret over what it calls “the disregard for Polish sensitivities and grief linked to the UPA’s estimated tens of thousands of victims and their families” in Zelenskyy’s decision.

Russia says it thwarted 'unprecedented' Ukrainian plot against military, detains woman in Moscow

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) claimed on Thursday to have thwarted an "unprecedented" wave of Ukrainian terrorist attacks targeting defense infrastructure and high-ranking military officials, including a foiled assassination plot in Moscow.

According to statements broadcast by Russian state media, the FSB alleged that Ukrainian intelligence, acting with Western backing, planned a series of coordinated drone strikes on a major defense contractor and various military logistics sites.

In a concurrent operation, authorities reported detaining a 25-year-old Russian woman in Moscow who they accuse of helping coordinate an assassination attempt against a senior Defense Ministry officer.

Interrogation footage released by state news agency TASS and verified FSB statements show the woman, identified as a native of the southern Rostov region, detailing her recruitment by Ukrainian handlers via the WhatsApp messaging platform. The FSB claimed her primary handler manipulated her by feigning a romantic relationship, promising they would be together in Ukraine once her missions were complete.

Acting on instructions in March 2026, the suspect allegedly rented an apartment near the targeted officer's residence. Video evidence released by authorities shows she installed a rotating Wi-Fi camera on the apartment's windowsill to broadcast real-time surveillance of the officer's vehicle directly to her handlers in Ukraine.

Investigators assert she was gathering intelligence and stocking the safehouse with supplies and camouflage for an unidentified hitman. She reportedly planned to flee Russia for Ukraine via Turkey and Moldova prior to the arrival of the assassin. The woman confessed on camera and now faces charges of state treason and preparation for a terrorist act.

Russian veteran who threatened Kremlin mutiny freed after arrest for extremist tattoos

A Russian military veteran who publicly threatened a mutiny if President Vladimir Putin refused to meet him on live television has been released from custody following an 11-day administrative arrest.

Alexander Lunin, 39, a former reconnaissance commander in the volunteer Sudoplatov battalion, sparked controversy in late June when he published a viral video appeal to Putin. Lunin claimed that thousands of Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine were being unlawfully detained and tortured in "zindans"—makeshift underground punishment pits—by their own commanders for refusing "suicidal orders" and facing financial extortion. He demanded a joint live broadcast with Putin, warning that if ignored, the army would "turn its weapons against the Kremlin".

Shortly after the appeal, a court in the Voronezh region sentenced Lunin to 11 days in jail for publicly displaying extremist or Nazi symbols.

Following his release on July 8, Lunin posted a brief video update to his Telegram channel confirming he was in Moscow and declaring he was safe. In the newly released footage, Lunin appears shirtless, prominently displaying large chest tattoos that closely resemble Neo-Nazi and ultra-nationalist insignia, such as the Black Sun, which likely served as the visual basis for his administrative charge.

"I lost a little weight, grew a beard, but everything is awesome," Lunin says in the video, telling followers not to worry about him. He added in a separate post that he "had to delay a bit" before reaching the capital.

Despite her husband's rebellious rhetoric and subsequent detention, Lunin's wife publicly distanced herself from his threats, issuing a statement declaring her absolute support for "the course of our president V.V. Putin."

Widespread blackouts hit Russian-occupied Kherson amid Ukrainian strikes on power grid

Russian-occupied areas of southern Ukraine's Kherson region have been hit by widespread power outages, local Kremlin-installed officials reported, as the region grapples with the fallout from a sustained campaign of Ukrainian drone strikes targeting energy infrastructure.

Vladimir Saldo, the Russian-appointed governor of the occupied Kherson region, announced the sweeping blackouts on his official social media channels, noting that emergency crews were scrambling to stabilize the grid.

"All districts of the Kherson region are completely or partially without power," Saldo wrote. "Energy workers and emergency services are already working on site and doing everything possible to return electricity to our homes as quickly as possible."

While Saldo's statement did not specify the catalyst for the grid failure, the blackout is part of a broader, severe power crisis currently paralyzing neighboring Russian-controlled territories, including the occupied Zaporizhzhia region and the Crimean peninsula. Earlier in the week, Saldo declared a "technogenic state of emergency" to expedite repairs.

Yevgeny Balitsky, the Russian-installed head of the Zaporizhzhia region, explicitly blamed the concurrent blackouts in his jurisdiction on targeted "enemy attacks" against electrical substations. Ukrainian military officials, including commanders of drone units, have publicly claimed responsibility for striking dozens of Russian energy nodes in the occupied south in recent days, an operation aimed at disrupting Russian military logistics, communications, and fuel supplies.

A resident of the Crimean city of Dzhankoi was killed during an overnight Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian-annexed peninsula, the region's Moscow-installed head, Sergei Aksyonov, said on Thursday.

"Last night, the Republic of Crimea was once again subjected to an enemy UAV attack. Unfortunately, one person — a resident of Dzhankoi — died," Aksyonov wrote on his social media channels.

The drone strikes have caused widespread blackouts across the region. Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, citing the local grid operator Krymenergo, reported that the cities of Dzhankoi, Krasnoperekopsk, Armyansk, and Kerch, along with the Dzhankoi and Krasnoperekopsk districts, were left completely without electricity.

Power in several other municipalities—including Feodosia, Yevpatoria, Simferopol, Saki, Sudak, and seven surrounding districts—is being supplied on a rolling basis, depending on the current capacity of the damaged power grid.

The attack is part of an ongoing Ukrainian campaign targeting Russian military logistics and energy infrastructure in Crimea, which Moscow seized and annexed in 2014. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) recently claimed responsibility for strikes on the Dzhankoi military airbase and port infrastructure in Kerch. Meanwhile, Russia's Defense Ministry stated its air defense systems intercepted 73 Ukrainian drones overnight across multiple regions, including Crimea and the Sea of Azov.

Russia’s deepening domestic fuel crisis is forcing local authorities to implement severe rationing measures, with Astrakhan becoming the fifth region to restrict retail gasoline sales based on license plate numbers.

Beginning July 9, Astrakhan motorists are subject to an odd-even rationing system to mitigate panic buying and extensive lines at gas stations. Vehicles with license plates ending in odd digits (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9) are permitted to refuel on odd-numbered calendar days, while those ending in even digits (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8) are restricted to even-numbered days. The emergency measures currently exempt diesel and natural gas purchases.

Astrakhan joins the Oryol, Lipetsk, and Nizhny Novgorod regions, as well as the Republic of Mordovia, which have recently introduced or are rolling out identical rationing schemes. The crisis shows no signs of abating, with the Pskov region announcing it will become the sixth territory to adopt the odd-even system starting July 10.

The drastic statewide shortages stem from a relentless campaign of Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russia's downstream oil infrastructure. The ongoing attacks on major refineries have crippled operations, slashing domestic gasoline production by roughly 25% amid peak summer demand and driving crude processing to its lowest levels in over two decades.

Two members of a Bulgarian spy ring convicted of carrying out espionage for Russia in the UK have been released from prison after serving half of their sentences, according to investigative journalist Christo Grozev.

The individuals were part of a six-strong network of Bulgarian nationals jailed in May 2025, receiving sentences ranging from five to over ten years. During their high-profile trial at the Old Bailey, the court heard that the group, directed by fugitive Austrian executive Jan Marsalek, had conducted extensive surveillance on Grozev and Roman Dobrokhotov, the editor-in-chief of the investigative outlet The Insider. Intercepted communications revealed the operatives had also discussed plots to kidnap or murder the two journalists.

Grozev stated that UK authorities failed to notify the journalists targeted in the espionage plot prior to the release of the convicts.

Under the sentencing guidelines set by the judge in May 2025, the defendants were required to serve at least half of their prison terms in custody before becoming eligible for parole, at which point they face automatic deportation back to Bulgaria.

A recent proposal to allow Ukraine to domesticate the manufacturing of U.S.-made Patriot air defense missiles sounds like a silver bullet for Kyiv’s critical munitions shortage. But the reality is a logistical minefield that will take years to navigate, according to Bloomberg and defense analysts.

Following U.S. President Donald Trump's pledge at this week's NATO summit in Ankara to grant Ukraine a production license, industry experts threw cold water on the timeline. Manufacturing the advanced interceptors—particularly the highly coveted PAC-3 variant—is an exceptionally complex endeavor.

To stand up a domestic production line, Kyiv would have to forge an entirely new supply chain, acquire highly specialized U.S. equipment, and undergo rigorous personnel training under strict American technology controls. Furthermore, any Ukrainian facility would immediately become a prime target for Moscow, requiring extensive concealed infrastructure and its own dedicated air defense umbrella just to protect the factory floor. Given the 23-to-25-month production cycle for a single PAC-3 missile, aviation experts estimate Ukraine wouldn't see its first home-built interceptor until at least 2029.

Consequently, defense strategists point to neighboring Poland as a far safer and more realistic industrial hub. That consensus was cemented on the sidelines of the Ankara summit on Wednesday, when a coalition of five nations—the U.S., Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden—inked an intergovernmental agreement to establish a specialized European center for the production and maintenance of PAC-3 missiles.

There is no unrest in Lwów, just russian propaganda. That's why mayor of Lwów is asking the residents to calm down.

>What we saw yesterday in Lviv is very bad. Not yet a diagnosis, but already a symptom.

58 thousand Lviv residents—men and women—are on the front lines today. Every day we bid farewell to our fallen fellow citizens. The city devotes the lion's share of its budget to supporting Ukraine's Defense Forces.
The shameful behavior of a group of people cannot destroy the community's reputation, but it has cast a shadow.

Today, Russia is most interested in Ukrainians starting to fight among themselves. Any internal conflict instantly becomes a tool of enemy propaganda.

In the fourth year of the full-scale war, Ukraine remains a rule-of-law state. The law must be the same for everyone. The events of yesterday evening must receive a proper legal assessment. All those who violated the law must be held accountable.

And let's finally stop calling service members "TCC workers." We can discuss the work of state institutions. But obstructing the military from carrying out their duties, destroying property, or taking the law into their own hands is unacceptable.

Last year, young people took to the streets with cardboard signs and stood their ground. I was there too. Such actions command respect.

The videos we saw yesterday are grief and shame.
Be wise!

The Hawks Waiting in the Wings: Why Zelensky’s Successors Could Be Even Less Open to Compromise with Moscow

1/2

According to a recent analysis circulated by the prominent political Telegram channel "Ukraine is Not Russia," the diplomatic outlook for any future peace settlement could become significantly bleaker if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is ousted. Counterintuitively, the channel argues, whoever eventually replaces Zelensky may prove to be far more hardline and fundamentally incapable of negotiating with Moscow.

The commentary points out a frequently forgotten historical irony: when Zelensky first assumed office in 2019, he was largely viewed as a moderate who was favorably disposed toward Russia. He campaigned on a genuine desire to "stop shooting" in the Donbas and normalize bilateral relations. During his first six months in power, he took significant political risks to achieve this, ordering controversial troop withdrawals along the contact line that deeply alienated the Ukrainian military.

However, a combination of objective realities, subjective domestic pressures, and Moscow's own miscalculations caused this peace platform to collapse. Ultimately, both capitals fell into a spiral of escalation that culminated in the Kremlin launching its full-scale invasion, officially termed the "Special Military Operation" by Russia.
>>
>>538617449
2/2

Today, the political landscape in Kyiv has fundamentally altered. The channel assesses that Zelensky’s chances of retaining power in any upcoming presidential election are virtually nonexistent. Waiting in the wings are two formidable, hawkish figures: former Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny, and Kyrylo Budanov, the former military intelligence (GUR) chief.

Zaluzhny commands the fierce loyalty of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, while Budanov is backed by the intelligence apparatus, special services, and powerful factions within the military. Crucially, both men enjoy substantial support from Ukraine's right-wing nationalist elements, making either "Za" or "Bu" a potentially uncompromising adversary for the Kremlin.

Russian Central Bank accused of masking FX data as ruble slides amid record trading volumes

1/2

Domestic economic analysts are raising red flags over the transparency of Russia’s foreign exchange data, accusing the central bank of obfuscating figures to mask the real drivers behind the ruble’s sudden summer depreciation.

According to a critique published by the prominent economic Telegram channel Mobilization Economy, the Russian Central Bank’s newly released June "Financial Market Risks Review" presents a contradictory picture of the domestic FX market. Official data shows that the supply of foreign currency inside Russia is currently double the domestic demand. Non-financial companies sold a staggering $27.7bn in foreign currency in June, vastly outstripping the reported $14.4bn (1.1tn rubles) in corporate demand.

Despite this overwhelming structural surplus, the ruble slumped sharply last month, dropping 9.5 per cent against the dollar (to 77.75) and 9.3 per cent against the yuan (to 11.46).

The Central Bank officially attributes the currency’s weakness to a 24.1 per cent monthly spike in importer demand, combined with the recent collapse in crude prices. Russian Urals crude plummeted from an average of over $86 a barrel to roughly $63 in June, following the resolution of the US-Israel war with Iran and the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz.

However, domestic analysts argue this official narrative does not fully explain the market's internal mechanics, pointing to a severe lack of data transparency. The Central Bank has stopped breaking down sales by top exporters, instead lumping both net sales and net purchases under a single, vague umbrella of "non-financial companies," making it virtually impossible to separate capital inflows from outflows.

RUSSIA HAS FOUND WAY TO JAM STARLINK AND TAKE DOWN UKRAINE’S DRONES
>As of July 2026, Russian forces are using a complex known as "Volna Kupol Garant" to destabilize Starlink connections, which Ukrainian forces rely on for piloting mid-range attack drones.
>The Volna Kupol Garant is a powerful electronic warfare (EW) system specifically designed to interfere with satellite communications. It emits a signal strong enough to destabilize Starlink connectivity over an area of approximately 20 square kilometers.
>Ukrainian military advisers report that Russia has deployed at least 10 of these systems near key military facilities and settlements to protect against drone strikes.
>Vulnerability: The jamming systems themselves emit powerful signals that make them highly visible to electronic intelligence. They have become high-priority targets for Ukrainian forces.

Furthermore, trading volumes on the FX spot market unexpectedly surged to 16.8tn rubles in June—the highest level recorded since December 2024. Average daily trading volumes similarly spiked from 626bn rubles in May to nearly 800bn rubles.

"From everything presented, one can make a cautious assumption that a group of large, systemic speculators is operating in the foreign exchange market," the channel concluded. "They are playing high-stakes games to generate profit through currency revaluation."

The Myth of the Miracle: Why Russia's 2000s Boom Was Built on Fed Liquidity, Not Kremlin Genius

1/2

It is a foundational myth of modern Russia that the country’s blistering economic recovery in the early 2000s was the direct result of the "wise policies" of its incoming leadership. However, a recent dive into the archives by the Russian economic Telegram channel Proeconomics suggests a far more prosaic savior: the US Federal Reserve and the cyclical commodities market.

Poring over a comprehensive, 211-page macroeconomic report published by the Russian Central Bank in 1999, the channel highlights a chart tracking Brent crude prices between 1994 and 1999. (At the time, Russia's flagship Urals blend traded virtually at parity with Brent). By late 1998, nominal prices had plunged to a seemingly catastrophic $9 a barrel.

Yet, when adjusted for inflation—the dollar’s purchasing power has halved between 1999 and 2026—the historical picture changes. An inflation-adjusted $20 barrel of crude in the late 1990s is roughly equivalent to $40 today.

Strikingly, that is exactly what Russia's Urals blend is fetching on the global market right now. Fresh data from Western pricing agencies in July 2026 puts Urals at a mere $40 to $42 a barrel, weighed down by the crippling discount it must offer to attract buyers away from the global Brent benchmark.

By the end of 1999, oil had climbed to an inflation-adjusted $50 a barrel, establishing the true springboard for Russia’s early-21st-century boom. "Some still believe that this rise was dictated by the 'wise policy of the new authorities,'" the channel notes. "But no, rather it was a derivative of the US Fed pumping the global economy with dollars."

The Central Bank’s 1999 report also recorded a 9 per cent increase in the physical volume of crude exports that year. This set a precedent for the ensuing decade, which saw massive, sustained growth not only in the price but the sheer volume of Russian exports across the board, from oil and gas to metals, timber, and fertilizers. It is a sobering lesson in economic history, one that underscores how closely Russia's fortunes have always been tethered to macroeconomic forces far beyond the Kremlin's walls.

A year after U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska, Moscow’s hopes that the White House would force Kyiv into capitulation appear to have been decisively dashed at this week's NATO summit in Turkey.

According to a recent analysis by the Russian daily Nezavisimaya Gazeta, the Kremlin had long harbored expectations that Trump would use his leverage to squeeze Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European allies into accepting Russia’s terms to end the war. Instead, the summit in Turkey’s capital revealed a stark diplomatic reversal: Trump is turning the screws on Moscow, rather than Kyiv or Europe.

"It is time to talk about the emergence of a 'spirit of Ankara' replacing the 'spirit of Anchorage,'" the paper noted, referring to the mood following the leaders' previous sit-down in Alaska.

During the July 7-8 NATO summit, Trump went significantly further in backing Ukraine than his predecessor, Joe Biden. He indicated a readiness to offer concessions to Kyiv that were previously deemed too escalatory by Washington. Notably, this includes strong signals that the U.S. will grant Ukraine a highly coveted license to domestically manufacture Patriot air defense missile systems—a move Trump openly teased during a joint press conference with Zelensky.

Furthermore, the NATO gathering resulted in a unified pledge to allocate €70 billion in aid to Ukraine this year, with the alliance's joint declaration officially cementing Russia's status as a "long-term threat". For the Kremlin, the diplomatic pivot underscores a sobering reality: the appeasement it anticipated following the 2025 Anchorage summit has failed to materialize.

Austria has definitively slammed the door on a return to Russian natural gas, stubbornly refusing to revive import channels even as Europe grapples with critically depleted fuel inventories ahead of the winter heating season.

According to Andrei Grozov, Moscow’s ambassador to Vienna, the Austrian government has completely abandoned previous internal debates about potentially resuming Russian energy imports once the conflict in Ukraine concludes. In an interview published this week by the Russian daily Izvestia, Grozov stated that earlier "timid reflections" from Austria's energy ministry regarding a post-war resumption of trade have now entirely vanished.

Vienna is instead moving in strict lockstep with Brussels, rigidly adhering to the EU's REPowerEU directive, which aims to legally force member states to phase out all Russian fossil fuel imports by 2027.

The diplomatic finality comes at a precarious moment for the continent's energy security. Following an unusually cold and prolonged 2025/2026 winter, EU gas storage levels have plummeted. As of early July 2026, European underground storage is hovering around just 50 per cent full—far below the historical average for the mid-summer refill season. Energy analysts project that at current sluggish injection rates, EU reserves may only reach 76 per cent capacity by the end of autumn, falling dangerously short of the bloc's mandatory 90 per cent readiness target.

Despite the looming crunch and the high cost of securing alternative liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US and Norway, Austria's energy ministry, led by Leonore Gewessler, recently drafted stringent domestic legislation mandating a complete corporate phase-out of Russian gas. Grozov criticized the pivot as economically self-destructive, claiming Vienna is actively destroying its own industrial foundation merely to appease the EU's geopolitical agenda.

Fourteen vessels were struck in the Sea of Azov overnight on July 9 by the Birds of the Unmanned Systems Forces (USF).

The worms’ shadow fleet is shrinking: within 96 hours, 35 tankers, bulk carriers, and specialized vessels were struck.
(The chronological list is below.)

Throughout the night, the USF Birds struck 45 military targets in the enemy’s operational depth in Crimea and the southern part of the temporarily occupied territories.

Among the wide variety of targets in Crimea were the Saky Thermal Power Plant, three fuel and lubricant depots/bases, two logistics depots, a Zhitel electronic-jamming station, communications towers, the worms’ temporary deployment points, fuel trucks, and 14 vessels belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet”: 12 tankers, one bulk carrier, and one tugboat. Russian homeowners are taking significantly longer to pay off their mortgages as soaring property prices and mounting household debt drastically reshape the domestic real estate market.

The actual lifespan of a Russian mortgage has more than doubled over the past four years, according to a recent report by the business daily Kommersant. As of January 2026, borrowers are taking an average of 9.3 years to fully clear their home loans. That represents an increase from 8.2 years in early 2025, and a stark jump from the 4.4-year average recorded in January 2022.

While the nominal contractual term for a Russian mortgage remains nearly 25 years, aggressive early repayment was historically the norm. However, local credit analysts note that the gap between the contractual term and the actual repayment date is rapidly closing. This shifting dynamic is primarily driven by skyrocketing housing costs that have drastically outpaced real income growth, forcing buyers to stretch out their payments to manage their monthly debt burdens.

Furthermore, high deposit rates offered by Russian banks over the last couple of years have severely diminished the incentive for early debt repayment. Financial experts note that many borrowers are finding it far more profitable to hold their cash in high-yield savings accounts rather than prematurely paying down their existing home loans.

Europe's only aquarium featuring trained Arctic seals is teetering on the brink of permanent collapse following the arrest of its owner, prompting an unusual government plea for civil servants to crowdsource the facility's survival.

According to a report by the state-run Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the Murmansk Oceanarium has been plunged into a severe financial crisis. The situation has grown so dire that the regional governor, Andrei Chibis, and his cabinet ministers have resorted to urging their own subordinates to make personal financial donations to keep the beleaguered institution afloat.

The crisis escalated earlier this year when the facility's sole proprietor, Oganes Shankoyan, was arrested and placed in a Moscow pre-trial detention center. He faces major fraud charges related to an unrelated 999-million-ruble ($11 million) state contract for road equipment. With the owner's bank accounts frozen, the aquarium's staff have gone unpaid since February, and the facility now faces a bankruptcy lawsuit filed in mid-June by the Federal Tax Service over millions of rubles in unpaid taxes and utility bills.

Though the oceanarium has actually been closed to the public since 2022 due to strict new federal licensing requirements, it remains home to several rare marine mammals, including endangered gray seals and a harp seal. While regional prosecutors recently reported that the animals are currently well-fed, desperate employees have publicly warned that without a steady funding source or an immediate transfer to state ownership, the seals could soon face starvation. Because the facility is privately owned and its accounts are under arrest, local officials claim that soliciting private "donations" is currently their only legal avenue to support the staff and animals.

Two key figures standing trial for a colossal 1.8bn-ruble (£16m) embezzlement scheme involving defective anti-tank fortifications on Russia’s border with Ukraine have abruptly petitioned a Moscow court to send them to the front lines.

Alexei Soshnikov, the former head of the Belgorod region’s capital construction department, and Konstantin Zimin, a local businessman, are accused of siphoning vast sums of state funds intended for "dragon's teeth" — pyramidal concrete obstacles designed to thwart Ukrainian armoured advances.

During the first substantive hearing of their case at Moscow's Meshchansky District Court this week, both defendants suddenly sought to halt their prosecution by volunteering to fight in Ukraine. Soshnikov told the judge he had "comprehended the situation" and felt a patriotic duty to join the military, asking the court to help him finalise his enlistment papers. Zimin went further, claiming he had already signed contracts with the Ministry of Defence twice since late 2025, but complained that investigators had inexplicably failed to drop his criminal charges.

Judge Oksana Goryunova swiftly rejected their dramatic pleas, ruling that military recruitment falls squarely outside the court's jurisdiction and instructing them to take it up with a military commissariat. The state prosecutor also vigorously opposed the motions.

The high-profile corruption scandal has struck a nerve in Russia's battered border regions. According to investigators, the accused syndicate charged heavily inflated prices for the border defences while pouring dangerously substandard concrete. Expert testimony tied to the case revealed that rather than being able to withstand a direct hit from a battle tank, some of the exorbitant "dragon's teeth" crumbled under the blow of an ordinary sledgehammer.

Drones struck two tankers in the Taganrog Bay, sparking fires on both vessels, Rostov regional Governor Yury Slyusar reported on the Telegram messaging app.

The UAV strikes caused mechanical damage to the ships. The blaze on one of the tankers has been completely extinguished, while the fire on the second vessel continues to burn, Slyusar said. The crews of both tankers were safely evacuated, and no casualties have been reported.

The incident marks the second consecutive night of drone attacks targeting vessels in the Taganrog Bay. The overnight assault saw Russian air defense systems intercept more than 20 drones across the wider Rostov region. Meanwhile, Ukrainian military sources indicated that the struck vessels are part of a Russian "shadow fleet" utilized to supply logistical support to occupying forces.

Russia is experiencing a rapid surge in the consumption of propane-butane as ongoing disruptions to domestic gasoline supplies drive motorists and businesses toward alternative fuels.

According to a report by Kommersant, consumption of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)—heavily utilized as an automotive and utility fuel—jumped 8.8% in the second quarter year-over-year, reaching 1.65 million tons. The pivot to LPG has triggered a parallel spike in demand from drivers rushing to install gas-cylinder fuel systems in their vehicles.

The squeeze stems directly from constraints on conventional gasoline availability, exacerbated by recent drone strikes on Russian oil refineries that have curtailed domestic output and prompted sales restrictions at gas stations. This shortfall has sparked panic buying on the St. Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange (SPIMEX), where wholesale LPG prices have skyrocketed by 61.4% since the start of July to 44,470 rubles per ton—the highest level seen since autumn 2021.

With historical seasonal trends indicating that peak consumption typically occurs later in the summer, market strain for the fuel is likely far from over.

Russia’s construction sector has begun slashing salary offers for new hires, marking an abrupt end to a multi-year wage spiral as severe macroeconomic headwinds batter the industry.

According to a report by Izvestia, property developers and construction firms have pulled out of the aggressive bidding war for labour. The reversal is being driven by a punishing combination of elevated central bank interest rates, cooling housing demand stemming from expensive mortgages, and a staggering corporate debt burden.

Sector-wide net obligations have surged to 481 per cent of EBITDA, effectively meaning net debt is now nearly five times the industry's annual operating profit. The financial squeeze is acute, with developers now burning through a record 37 per cent of their profits merely to service interest payments on loans.

Forced to prioritise margin preservation over recruitment, construction firms have pushed average wage offers down by 0.8 per cent to below 97,000 roubles a month—making it the only sector in the current Russian economy to see a decline in starting pay. Analysts warn that if tight monetary policy persists, this cooling effect is highly likely to ripple across other capital-intensive corners of the economy, directly threatening building material manufacturers, commercial real estate, and transport logistics.

Russia is advancing legislative measures that would allow theaters to stage adaptations of literary works deemed "national treasures" without the consent of the authors' estates, according to Vladimir Mashkov, the head of the Union of Theatre Workers of the Russian Federation.

Mr. Mashkov, a prominent actor and vocal supporter of the Kremlin, told state media that work on the new legal framework is already underway. "The heirs of Russian authors should not have the right to prohibit the use of their relatives' works," he said.

The initiative represents a direct response to a growing trend of foreign-based descendants of celebrated Soviet and Russian writers blocking domestic performances of their ancestors' works in protest of the war in Ukraine.

In recent months, Mr. Mashkov has actively lobbied President Vladimir V. Putin to override these copyright holds, arguing that emigrated heirs are weaponizing intellectual property for ideological reasons and thereby depriving the Russian public of its cultural heritage. Mr. Putin has publicly backed the proposal, tasking officials with finding a "civilized" legislative workaround. While the proposed framework would strip heirs of their right to veto productions, theaters would reportedly still be required to allocate standard royalty payments for the performances.

Amid the grinding realities of the war in Ukraine, Russian authorities are reviving a Soviet-era crackdown on "parasitism" by imposing strict new labor mandates on former inmates.

According to a report by Nezavisimaya Gazeta, the Russian government will now force paroled and supervised ex-convicts to actively secure employment or formally register with state labor services. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has justified the sweeping measure by linking unemployment to criminal recidivism, framing the mandate as an essential administrative restriction to maintain public order.

Yet the policy contains a stark loophole that highlights the Kremlin's ongoing need for frontline manpower. Authorities are simultaneously offering to entirely wipe away these strict supervisory and labor regimes for any ex-convict willing to sign a military contract to fight in what Moscow calls its "special military operation".

Legal observers note that while the Russian Criminal Code already theoretically allows courts to require employment for paroled individuals, this new dragnet operates outside the bounds of the country's established probation framework. The dual approach effectively creates a coercive pipeline designed to funnel socially vulnerable men either into domestic labor or the trenches of Ukraine.

In a major technological upgrade to its intelligence apparatus, NATO is deploying an AI-driven military platform developed by the American data giant Palantir to track Russian forces across the alliance's vulnerable eastern flank.

According to a report by The Times, the transatlantic alliance is rolling out the Maven Smart System (MSS NATO). The software ingests and fuses real-time data from a vast array of military intelligence feeds—including satellite imagery, drone video streams, and radar stations—to map troop concentrations and monitor Russian military maneuvers in near real-time.

By applying computer vision and machine learning to this massive data pool, the Palantir-built system acts as an algorithmic sentinel. It is designed to automatically alert NATO commanders to concerning Russian activities that might demand an allied response, such as the sudden redeployment of elite units like the 76th Guards Air Assault Division toward the Baltic borders. Crucially, the platform doesn't just watch; in the event of an armed conflict, Maven is equipped to assist military command in rapidly generating operational plans and identifying specific targets for allied strikes.

Russia’s booming gig economy is staging a quiet boycott against the state’s social safety net, blowing a hole in the government’s revenue projections for 2026.

According to an Accounts Chamber report cited by Izvestia, the country's self-employed workforce is overwhelmingly refusing to make voluntary contributions toward their future pensions and sick leave. The Russian Social Fund had projected it would collect 7 billion rubles for each insurance category this year. Instead, first-quarter collections yielded a meager 574 million rubles for pensions—just 8.5% of the annual target—and a dismal 34 million rubles (0.5%) for sick leave coverage.

Economic analysts attribute the shortfall to a structural mismatch between the state's demands and the financial realities of freelance work. To secure a full year of pension credit, independent workers must pay a steep minimum premium of 71,500 rubles annually. For many of Russia's 17 million registered self-employed workers, who often face volatile income streams, the upfront cost is prohibitively high. Furthermore, workers express deep skepticism regarding the long-term viability of the state pension system, viewing the potential payouts as uncertain and mathematically unfavorable.

If this trend holds, demographic experts warn that millions of gig workers will reach retirement age entirely reliant on the state’s minimum social pension, setting the stage for a severe future strain on the federal budget and the formally employed tax base.
