He believes this because when they drew down some of the caverns, they noticed a bunch of damage was done before they reached the bottom and had to go to a different cavern. America also can't stop exporting crude and crude products because we export the excess sweet crude we don't need and import the sour crude we do need. Physical prices in europe touched $150 over a month ago, the futures didn't respond the same way. The reality is that a huge short order is rolling in WTI right now and every time trump put out "peace talks happening now", the boomers with large hedge funds got scared and sold, letting the downward pressure slam prices and giving shorts a way out. This repeated for 2 months with trump basically accepting all of iran's demands to try and get oil out of hormuz and prevent a catastrophe. Then trump tried to get around the MoU and iran waited until after the state funeral to assert themselves. That's where we are. There's a massive short position by market makers/traders who have sold SPR oil in the WTI futures and owe that oil back in the future. They basically borrow america's oil and promise to give it back later. Some of these dealers likely got out after prices collapsed below $70. Others might still be holding their short positions and rolling them each month or delivering part of their order with SPR oil. This could also explain why only half million barrels left the SPR each day for the past 2 weeks, some of the dealers are closing out the shorts and bought the oil back already. The problem was never an immediate issue though, it takes ships months to deliver oil to asia, so the price kept moving on expectations in the beginning, it's only now that we're seeing oil shortages draw closer. Europe won't even disclose their reserves right now.
