Doctors understand this.
Normies don't.
Doctors like it that way.
For most conditions, the body can only heal itself.
>But the drug my doctor prescribed will make me heal faster right?
Wrong.
It will likely give you benefit of healing faster due to the placebo effect, rather than from the drug itself.

Every drug proven in a clinical trial comes with 2 numbers attached:
NNT: Number needed to treat
NNH: Number needed to harm
The first number is how many people in the trial needed to be given the drug in order for ONE person to get a measurable benefit above the number of people on placebo who got that benefit. NNH is the number of people who need to take it before one person in the group gets harmed.

For tylenol, NNT is 3. You're actually UNLIKELY to get pain relief from tylenol, unless you're the lucky one in three. The rest get the placebo effect and kid themselves into thinking the doctor ordered it so it must be helping.
For statins, the NNT is more like 50-300 and the NNH (e.g. risk of brain damage - but they call it 'cognitive impairment' which sounds better - from taking statins) is often on par with the likelihood of actually getting the benefit.
>>
tylenol was always shit.
nimesulid on the other hand? that shit cam bring back the dead.
>>
Is there no way to compensate for the placebo effect in drug experimentation?
I seem to remember that there is and that this is actually a standard part of any such experiments, but I must be mistaken.

It's called a double blind study.
Let's say I have 500 dosages.
I use a random number generator to determine which dose is placebo and which one is real.
Then I hand the whole tray to someone else.
This person then distributes the dosages.
This means neither patient nor distributor knows what is in the pill.
We then look whose symptoms change faster.
If there's no difference the drug is considered a failure.
OP is retarded.

Nigger what the fuck are you talking about. Paracetamol(tylenol) is a fever reducer and it WORKS.
>>
How about medicine for animals you dumb nigger? You think they understand placebo, esp when they trying to spit up pills you have to trick them into swallowing?

Holy fuck.

they usually just treat the symptom and not the cause.
>back hurt
>get opioids,
>thatl be 1 gorrilion dollars goy
>yay back doesnt hurt as much
>oops you had a tumor this whole time, well time to die

Or something less dramatic. Heartburn. what do you do for heartburn? Take antacids so the acid doesn't irritate your esophagus. Whats a common cause for heartburn? Low stomach acid which fails to signal your lower esophageal sphincter to close. oops

You are a fucking moron who can’t into chemistry. You are distrustful of the world because people lied to you, and now you’re on a journey to prove them all wrong about how they are being lied to. Just stop.

Stomach ulcers are now known to be caused by H. Pylori; treatable with antibiotics. Doctors prefer to prescribe ongoing proton pump inhibitors. A walk around the parking lot at your local hospital will clue you in to which master they serve

An elevated body temperature is how your body fights the infection. Of course you schemers want to bring it down; the same way you put ephedrine in cold capsules to stop the mucousal flush

>rareflag. witnessed

quiting coffee abuse and lion diet fixed it for me. of course doc prescribed inhibitors.
they assume everyone is on pills, at least from 20+ onward
>be me almost 50
>doc: what pills do you take?
>me: none
>doc: surprised_pikachu.jpg

Everyone I know over 50 takes at least half a dozen pills every day, they don't question it for some reason. They think I'm nuts when I tell them not to take statins and eat a lot of eggs. It's bizzarre.
>>
>>540699802
By giving 50% the placebo, doing a headcount of the number who get the benefit in both groups.

If more than 5% more people benefit in the drug group than the placebo group, that's regarded as a statistically significant (proven) benefit.

MFW various pseudointellects getting upset in this thread don't have reading comprehension or understand what "likely" means.

For the slow people let me explainify:

- Likely means >50% probability. A drug with an NNT of 3 has a 33.3% probability. That's called "unlikely"*.
- Drugs with an NNT <=2 are likely to help vs perceived placebo benefit.
- Most drugs have an NNT >2 which makes them unlikely to help a random test subject.

*They taught this at school but the vaxx causes memory loss.
>>
Explain double blind studys
>>
>>540701861
OK retard.
- 1 group gets placebo
- 1 group gets real drug
- Some people get better or worse in either group.
- Statistical significance threshold is 5% or greater difference between the two groups. Hopefully higher but 5% is the accepted minimum standard.

Drug is thus statistically proven to benefit more people than a placebo does.

That doesn't mean everyone gets a >=5% benefit from their prescription. It means more than 5% of people over the placebo group got the benefit.

Typical normie misunderstanding.
>>
>>540699699
No shit.
Most medicines don’t treat the underlying disease. They mainly alleviate symptoms related to the disease/disorder so that normalcy can be maintained. However, if the medication regime is halted, the symptoms return.
This helps generate continuous profit for the pharmaceutical industry. If they cure you, then they lose a lifetime customer. But if they just treat your symptoms, they have a consumer for life.
>>
>>540702137
Yes, a .05, or 5%, standard deviation is the established standard threshold for most scientific experiments.
However, being 6% better than the placebo doesn’t necessarily mean the drug will be approved.
Sometimes there are extremely negative side effects that have a low chance of occurring, but are so severe that the risk is not worth the approval.
This is often overlooked though, like with the COVID-19 vaccines, depending on the situation.
Basically, drug approval is all situational and relative. In our country, with how corrupt the FDA is, the process is held hostage by big pharma lobbyists.

Most medications aim to reduce the symptoms or compounding conditions, which allows your body to heal more quickly and makes you less miserable in the mean time.
Antibiotics are probably the biggest exception as those directly fight infections.
>>
>>540702531
A little. You think reducing fever pharmaceuticaly is a good idea. You go to doctors. You aren't totally retarded because you refuse the brain dissolving stations. Perhaps you are just young

>You think reducing fever pharmaceuticaly is a good idea
I didn't mention that anywhere. Honestly once you reach 39C+ it may be a good idea to take it down a little for a while so you can get some sleep.
I go to doctors when I need some paper signed or to allow me to take some time off work because I feel my body needs time to rest. Also when I suffer some injury due to sports usually.
I had lumps under my chin so I was kind of worried, doc came to conclusion my esophagus is burned by my stomach acid. Would love to be young again, lmao.

They were never meant to heal only suppress while also giving you more problems (side effects) so you take even more medications until eventually you get so sick from them you die.

They want us dead. Go back 100+ years and medicine was completely different, and natural.
>>
>>540699699
So the placebo effect rule should be true for vaccines as well, correct?
>>
The pill is nothing. The mind is everything. I’ve been able to use intense visualization to heal nerve injuries in my feet, a severe cold, at least two perhaps three times. What’s wild is initially it was trying to visualize, soothing, or removing things sort of mechanically which had one level of power and then I was able to get up into abstract, symbolic levels, where you’re actually manipulating energy to manipulate energy, and that seemed an order of magnitude more powerful. For example, I would try to create a black screen in my mindand then wait for an image appeared to me. I wouldn’t try to project my imagination onto it, but I just passively waited, and then in one case a chamber appeared in my mind made up of tissue. Like biological tissue I mean. And then everything looked fine, but there was this one anomaly in the corner, where if all the walls of the chamber were like a light white blue there was this one protrusion of the corner that was red. I focused on healing that with energy and then the protrusion went away and then in a couple hours, my cold was completely gone. Is an advanced technique, but the initial mechanical method I tried where I was focusing on nerves in my feet where I would soothe them with this white cream took longer, but eventually worked.I’m thinking this can be taught through intense imagination and visualization. Of course it would put 99% of the medical industry out of business.

Ask how I know.

3 people take statins. Only one of them needs the statin to prevent another heart attack. The other two will not have a heart attack whether or not they take the statin. Nobody knows which one will be the one to have the potentially deadly heart attack. Statin side effects are mainly a bit of muscle soreness. Who takes the statin to prevent a deadly acute coronary syndrome and who boldly declares they are too smart for medicine? I'm taking the statin but that's bc in not retarded like OP.

Is there a name for the type of study in picrel?
I think it's pretty clever.

>Give an active drug to 2 groups
>Tell one group they're receiving the drug
>Lead the other to believe they are receiving a placebo
>Discover the benefits of the drug itself vs drug + wishful thinking

It's a small study but a shame adverse effects weren't reported to form a placebo/nocebo profile.
Such a study could also easily be expanded to include a real placebo group.
