When there’s nothing left, but the fire in my chest
And the air that fills my lungs
I’ll hold my tears, and trade my years for a glimpse at Kingdom Come
On the other side of misery, there’s a world we long to see
The strife we share will take us there, to relief and sovereignty

Oh by God we’ll have our home again, by God we’ll have our home
By blood or sweat, we’ll get there yet, by God we’ll have our home

In our own towns, we’re foreigners now, our names are spat and cursed
The headlines smack of another attack, not the last and not the worst
Oh my fathers they look down on me, I wonder what they feel
To see their noble sons driven down, beneath a coward’s heel

The road is dark, the way is lost, my eyes they strain to see
I struggle forth to find a friend to light the way for me
Oh brothers can you hear my voice? Or am I all alone?
If there’s no fire to guide my way, then I will start my own

>Nobody can now pretend that China isn’t our enemy. The revelations in The @Telegraph that China is accused of secretly funding pro-Palestine demonstrations in Britain – channelling funds to far-Left activist groups to sow chaos on our streets – should send a chill down the spine of every minister in Whitehall.
>The reality is that to protect ourselves the Government must be honest. We are at war but hamstrung in dealing with the threat. The reality is that we must now place China in the upper tier of FIRS (the foreign influence registration scheme) and in so doing define China as a threat which is what our Security Services want and need

The only argument I'll entertain from Arday's defenders is that people more deserving than him were not hounded in this way by the media. I remember reading Kubizek's book about his adolescent friendship with Adolf Hitler about a decade ago. I can't remember why I decided to read it, but it was really interesting and quite relatable, moreso than I imagined before beginning to read. It was quite relieving, and surprising, to find Karl Ove Knausgaard writing about the book in the fourth book in his My Struggle series of autobiographical novels. I felt it was brave of him to write about that. It's always a small pleasure to discover something obscure I enjoy being appreciated by a culturally important figure, although there is a sense of frustration that it is no longer an obscure thing. It's happened a few times with musicians and so on, but I can't complain really.

We can only live life very close up on like 200% zoom, yet when we consider life we imagine we have a full scan and move forwards through time.

In the Scorsese film Silence (2016), it's suggested by Father Ferreira that the Christian converts in Japan never actually understood or accepted true Western Christianity. Instead, he argues that the converts simply twisted the faith to fit their pre-existing culture. In other words, they adopted it and then adapted it to their own local traditions and faith. The technical term for this is syncretism. This leads to the question: how much did Rome change Christianity? Then you have the way missionaries converted pagans populations. They used a process called inculturation. They adapted Christianity to the ways, teachings, and practices of the specific local culture they were dealing with to better resonate with them. Of course, this was done while also trying to keep the central message of the gospels intact. It's why they tolerated Vikings carrying artifacts with the cross on one side and a Norse god on the other. Then you had the incorporation of Greek philosophy into Christianity. Adapting virtues into the four cardinal virtues, for instance. You have to wonder if the English were always destined to create a more individualistic minded version of Christianity that challenged central authority.

I don't think I've ever felt as nihilistic and unmotivated as I do right now. For a few months now I've felt more than ever as though the magic of life, the essential flow of life which is a by-product of our innate desire to live and flourish has been utterly lacking in me. I feel more than ever like some kind of afterthought hanging around for the sake of it. Recently in work I had a meeting with my senior manager. He is a good man and I respect him, but he mentioned without prompting that a colleague of mine and I have such different personalities though strangely seem to get on well. The colleague in question is a popular, athletic guy who is married, loves sport and is several years my junior. I found it such an odd comment but took no offence. People's instincts about you are something you just have to accept, and no doubt he's right. It was just that he felt the need to point it out. He also called me "young man" in a joking way, which I found a little embarrassing but took on the chin. I think I probably come across as quiet, meek, naive and unassertive. It is what it is. I have a feeling that I've taken too many wrong paths in life, and that I just have to grin and bear it from here on in. In Aldi the other evening a couple around my age were joking in the frozen aisle and seemed light-hearted and in love, and the woman started jokingly singing "there's a hole in my bucket", which I vaguely recognised. She sang it in such a humorous and carefree way, I couldn't help but start smiling.

I was thinking about going to Japan, or Argentina, or France, or the Balkans, but it all feels equally as aimless. I don't want to spend it stuck in my room however, as I've done for the majority of my birthdays since my mid-teens.

Life when taken in it's fullness, is neither the crucible nor is it the lunchable- but rather people believe it to be a kind of (and excuse me) smorgasbord of assorted licorice, BUT neither is it that. No, neither is it that:-
Many men follow wrongsuch paths, and many men thusly ski off piste of what must be taken slalomly.
However, (and it must be stated clearly... and with a solemn heart!) right and wrong are but two sides; if like a fool to be believed there are such things. For every side there is another, this is the UNDETERMINED principle gentlemen- imagine a coin badly drawn and THAT is the true artifice. The nom de guerre of the territoire, mon ami. The crem de la creme, the piece de resistance. Like a musket left in a museum, or the final wrap left at the end of a busy supermarket day.

I've been playing a lot of Fallout recently and it's surprising how video games still have the capacity to influence my psychological disposition. About three years ago I played Stalker during winter and after a couple of hours I turned it off and felt quite depressed and a little scared, perhaps a part of my brain was still unloading itself from the bleak irradiated landscape in the game. Playing Fallout has had a similar effect, albeit I've found myself during heatwaves drinking a glass of water or something and very momentarily appreciating a glass of radiation-free water. I didn't play video games pretty much throughout my twenties. I also didn't watch that many movies. Only during my late 20s and early 30s did I really start watching movies again and realised how much I loved them. They often stay with me for days, or longer. When I talk about movies with someone, I almost instantly feel a reluctance to explain my likes and dislikes, or the plot of some movie, in any detail. On the one hand I know they probably aren't very interested, which is fine because I feel the same, but on the other it's such a private experience, and any meaning or value gained from watching feels so distinct and unique that I barely feel it's worth trying to communicate.

Looking back at my life, it's clear I had and probably still have some kind of downward motivation, in the sense of wanting for whatever reason to sabotage the prospect of happiness and to wilfully undermine my potential. I can't explain it really. I remember applying for universities and daydreaming about applying for one of the ones at the very bottom of the ranking table, though I don't remember my motivation for that. When I rather spontaneously resigned from a stable, well-paying job a few years ago I bought a bunch of hiking gear and daydreamed about heading off to Europe with no real direction or end date. I didn't do it, which I regret, btu still it probably wasn't a healthy desire in the scheme of things. But then who knows. I wish I had been less fearful of life in my twenties and acted in a more brave and adventurous way. I think periods of borderline insanity are likely productive in some obscure way, at least in forcing you to become acquainted with the kernel of your being.

I remember a couple of times in university a girl showed interest in me, and I avoided it for whatever reason. I never had that predatory, killer instinct that pursued sex or romance. I'm not sure why, I just wasn't as horny or desirous as I perhaps should have been. I remember on one night out it was fancy dress or something, and a girl on my course who had very large breasts (it's just a fact) approached me while we were both drunk. I was looking for my housemates or something, or maybe she was looking for hers, I don't know, but we ended up walking around drunkenly with our arms around each other. I probably could have guided things in a sexual direction, but I didn't for whatever reason. I think a part of me has always viewed sex as this predatory thing, when others see it as a fun. I don't know. There were a couple of really sweet, quiet girls who made an effort to sit near me or talk to me but I always just went into smiling nice guy mode and threw a wet towel over things. I was too naive and childish for a relationship, but then again I was young enough for that to be okay. Maybe I was just too fearful. Being cowardly and fearful are unfortunate traits, particularly in a man. I've learned that the hard way.

I remember this one girl in my lectures in university. She was about 5'2, had brown hair, was quiet, thin, and I remember (rightly or wrongly) wearing some kind of knitted jumper, the kind a homely, bookish girl might wear. I was sat alone as usual at the back of the lecture room, and she came over with her Polish friend and sat next to me. She asked me if she could borrow a pen and I said sure and handed her one. At this time I was still struggling, as I do now, with talking to people. At that time it was more the case of me stuttering or getting stuck on words and panicking and being unable to vocalise them properly and giving it a couple of attempts before smiling in embarrassment and using a different word. Talk about pathetic. Anyway during this lecture she professor left the room and there was a technical issue with something they had left on screen. Everyone seemed to be pretending it wasn't happening, but I got up and went to fix it and then went back to my seat. When I sat down she turned and smiled at me but I just clammed up and retreated inwardly. It would have done me good to have a relationship at that time in my life, even if it didn't work out. I'm the kind of person who would really love someone and be with them long term.

I enjoyed going to the old Tesco. It was much smaller than the new one, and had lower ceilings and there were no self-checkout tills. I liked the brickwork on the outside. I still remember where the salad was, and where the meat counter was. For the meat counter you had to reach for a ticket and pull it off and then when the man was ready your number would appear in red on a digital screen, and he would give my mum some billy bear slices. I asked my mum for a Pepperarmi pretty often and I used to suck the juices off the transparent plastic wrapper. I would stand on the back wheels of the trolley and my mum would push it, which I enjoyed. There was a cafe there and I would get a tray and push it along the parallel horizontal metal bars to where the people would serve you. They had fixed-in-place tables and brown brick-style tiles on the floor with shallow grooves between each brick. My mum would buy Coco Pops and I would fill up the bowl to the brim and then fill it with milk and wait until it got all mushy and then eat all of it on Saturday morning in my pyjamas and dressing gown in front of the gas fire watching cartoons on ITV. Sometimes you would bite a kernel or whatever and wasn't a nice experience. My mum wasn't an adventurous cook. I didn't try olives until I was around sixteen, and I didn't have my first Indian until my late-20s. We basically ate the same things all the time. She would make Sheppard's pie and stuff like that, but I rarely enjoyed it. One time I wasn't hungry and she had served me Sheppard's pie and wouldn't let me leave the table until I ate it but I cried and didn't want to eat it. I ate a lot of chips, beans, peas, bacon. I couldn't believe some middle-class teenagers grow up eating things like Greek salad, hummus, olives, sourdough bread, and various exotic dishes.
