Usually I think every one of Trump's ideas are bad but this one might make sense. Going back to old school catapults might make the ship more secure in modern warfare. I mean think about it... electromagnetic launchers? That sounds like a vulnerability to mean. Same with computer systems. In the age of AI and digital dependence and drones and an arsenal of unholy unmanned warfare, going oldschool and analog might be the safest?

You have no fucking clue what you’re talking about
If you did, your paragraph of uninformed speculation wouldn’t be filled with question marks
EMALS has been in development for decades and works fine, trump is just a fucking retard that feels like he needs to redesign everything lest his presidential legacy be entirely Epstein, jeets, and Iran failure
>>
>>540858189
So what's easier for an attacker to render inoperable? A steam catapult or a modern catapult?
>>
>>540858254
Steam catapults by far. I’m not going to list all of the specific failure modes of the steam cat system but EMALS removes like half of the potential points of failure.
Steam is also more maintenance intensive.
>>

Not if it’s shielded, and a tactical EMP attack is:
>indistinguishable from a conventional tactical nuclear strike
>will disable a steam cat as well as the flight deck equipment if unshielded
>will likely disable a steam cat for longer because the steam cat needs multiple other systems such as desalination systems
>>
>>540858608
>>540858626
No it's not. An "EMP" attack does not mean everything is shut down. I would think some systems on a ship have backups and more protected hardware than other systems. I would think that the ability to launch a ship is one of the most important systems.
>>
>>540858763
ability to launch a plane*
>>
>>540858733
they probably have tech now to EMP things and nukes are clearly fake and gay.
>>
>>540858763
Hitting a carrier with an EMP is going to be interpreted the exact same as hitting a carrier with an AShM, i.e. the CSG is probably going to make you wish you chose a conventional warhead
Any EMP that is not large enough to be something like a HANEMP is going to be intercepted by an arleigh-burke before it gets within 10nm of the carrier, and a HANEMP is a nuclear option which means you’ve wrecked space and pissed off millions of people and are going to get a strategic response most likely
EMP is relatively easy to shield against for military equipment, and has never even been proven to be effective relative to conventional strikes
>>
>>540858626
>If you get hit by an emp it's curtains regardless
EMPs are much less of a danger than people think. It doesn't automatically fry everything electronic, very few electronics would be permanently damaged. The biggest risk would be the electrical power grid because long power lines would act like antennas and then electromagnetic surge would fry a lot of transformers.
>>
>>540858940
They’ve had “tech” to EMP things since the 80s, it’s just not particularly effective unless your EMP is a nuke detonated at 200mi ASL and your target is miles of unshielded cable (power lines)

nobody here understands the point of all this is just to spend money to keep our economy afloat. we literally need to create a trillion in debt every year or the economy implodes. we can change the carrier design to the old style then update it again to the new one next year. this is how we keep the boomers bags pumped and wealthy

he also wants a new generation of BATTLESHIPS because he loves the old style aesthetic too.

Dear Mr. Trump,

Battleships have been proven obsolete since 1921 and the Billy Mitchell bombing demonstrations.

Thank you for your attention.

P.S. If it's not a submarine, it's going to get sunk within one week of the start of WWIII. And we shouldn't be so sure even about submarines either. It could be possible if difficult to trace their electro magnetic trails under the water from satellite sensors though if such a technology exists it's secret for now.

By the time they finish building more of these floating coffins, they'll be even more obsolete than they are right now. Next gen of hypersonic anti-ship missiles isn't going to care whether the catapult is steam or magnets.

that's a good way to put it, any time something is more complicated the more chances of failure. Redundancy and simplicity is always more reliable but at the cost of higher tech that offers better performance or efficiencies.

Is EMP shielding really being reliability tested?
I keep wondering about this.
As a general principle, if it's not tested, it doesn't work.
I assume that there are proper ways to test EMP resilience without an actual nuclear explosion. By using lower power emissions and internal sensors to confirm that the shielding reduces power by the expected proportion. Any wiring that penetrates the shielding, check what happens if you channel excessive power through it. Things like that.
But, is this actually being properly done? Usually the military will do some REAL tests at some point. They will shoot a shell at a tank to see if it actually holds up. They will fire real missiles to see if AD can actually intercept. They will brutalize ruggedized hardware to see if it still works afterward. Can't do that with nuclear EMPs.
Wouldn't be surprised desu if a nuclear explosion happens that half of the stuff that was supposed to be shielded ends up not really being shielded, for whatever reason. Could be caused by improper maintenance too, not just design/testing errors.

EMP hardening is a real thing, especially in military hardware. Its actually not that difficult, especially in an aircraft carrier where its already underneath thick steel. It just consists of using proper grounding and shielding, overload suppressors. The thing with EMP is massive civilian device damage that isn't hardened, and also with power distribution systems where there are large loop areas.

With the way you reframed the argument, I'm thinking you might have ears below your eye line and an elongated septum. Tried and true technology is often used when a new weapon system fails to meet expectations. Sometimes we try to jump too far forward instead of taking the baby steps to improve our most important systems. The more of a technological leap you take, the more reengineering you're going to have to do while you work out the kinks. A lot of really great ideas fail when put to the test in reality. It's OK to admit when it doesn't turn out well and correct course.
