In my experience it's normal. I've been to funerals where the family of the person crack jokes or tell heartwarming stories that often get a few laughs or smiles out of people.

It can be, depending on the circumstance
What's never acceptable is a notable speaker falling asleep out of boredom and disinterest in front of everyone during a memorial

It's normal. Funerals are funny. Try looking around at one. Everyone has these faces. You know what I mean. But it's bad form to laugh. And so you bite down on it, waiting for that one family member to tell an amusing story. And that's your opening, you can let it all out. And that family member is happy to think that you enjoyed his story and have happy memories of the departed. That's kind of funny, too.

I'm a white Christian male. I've been to a load of Christian funerals and I go to two war memorial ceremonies every year. There's always been jokes and funny remarks. Always.

Based on eyewitnesses, it was a simple polite greeting. It's normal to smile during a greeting.
