In mid-September, Third Army Corps commander Andrii Biletskyi announced a counteroffensive in the northern Donetsk region. Ukrainian forces cleared Novoselivka, Oleksandrivka, and Yarova, and secured the outskirts of Korovii Yar while liberating and securing Serednie. The operation was conducted under an information blackout, which is why details had not previously been made public.

The operation was dubbed Vivaldi, after Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. When Biletskyi first revealed it, he emphasized that the cycle has four seasons—and that Ukraine had disclosed only Season one.

Season two has now followed.

Ukrainian forces liberated Shandryholove and Derylove and established full control over nearby Drobysheve in the Lyman sector of the northern Donetsk region. Across the first two seasons of Operation Vivaldi, Ukrainian forces have brought 125 square kilometers of territory under their control, including 50 square kilometers liberated from Russian occupation.

The Third Army Corps says Russian forces have suffered more than 3,000 soldiers killed and wounded during the operation.

What matters more than the Vivaldi metaphor is what the operation demonstrates: Ukrainian forces are conducting successful offensive operations in the very region Russia has spent years trying to bring fully under its control. Ukraine is pushing Russian forces back and regaining territory in the Donetsk region.

It is yet another indication that Russia’s offensive war is stalling—and that giving away Ukrainian territory for nothing is the worst possible strategy.

Russia launched a major overnight missile and drone barrage across Ukraine that continued into Thursday morning, with explosions still audible in Kyiv. Russia's defense ministry called it a strike on military related targets, including industrial sites, refineries, logistics hubs, and port infrastructure, in nine Ukrainian cities, but civilian buildings were hit too. The attack killed at least two people, a 78 year old woman in Zaporizhzhia and one person in Kharkiv, and wounded at least 14 more.

In Odesa, an attack lasting more than seven hours damaged a 16 story apartment building, two educational facilities, and a grain elevator, with train delays of more than 17 hours following. Russian drones also hit distribution centers for a toy store chain, a confectionery company, and an electronics retailer, part of what appears to be a pattern of targeting Ukrainian businesses. Ukraine's air force said it shot down or suppressed seven Russian ballistic missiles.

Ukraine kept up its own long range drone campaign into Russia during this period, striking Russian command posts near Donetsk and hitting logistics facilities belonging to Ozon, Russia's second largest e-commerce company, following earlier strikes on warehouses belonging to Wildberries. Russia claimed its air defenses shot down 267 Ukrainian drones over the same stretch.

Zelenskyy called for more Western air defense support, particularly Patriot missiles and ballistic missile defense packages, and was expected to visit Moldova on Thursday for its independence day. That visit came amid rising regional unease after several drones briefly entered Moldovan airspace overnight.
