If I hadn't had this conversation 1000 times, I would presume that when people say 'Jesus obviously existed' they're talking about the Christ in the gospels and arguing for that character to have been historical. However, this is rarely the case and even when it is, the fact that you can demonstrate that everything about the Jesus Christ character of the gospels comes from other literary sources (Old Testament, Roman, Greco), thus showing that a historical Christ need not exist to create the gospels.
