Why did German civilians abandon their eastern territories and mass-flee starting from October 1944? Why didn't the civilians and everyone else chip in and organize resistance against the invading Red Army?

We Poles have never abandoned our territories. Makes me think Germans subconsciously realized it's not really their land and therefore had fewer qualms abandoning it outright.
I think it's shameful behavior too. Fleeing like rats, abandoning their homesteads to the enemy
>A 2005 study indicated that about 4 million Germans remained on Polish territory in mid-1945, out of the pre-war population of about 10 million. By 1950, about three million persons had been deported from Poland and 1 million persons were verified as Polish citizens.[57]
the vast majority fled, 3 million were deported from mid-1945 to 1950 & 1 million stayed after 1950 (with hundreds of thousands emigrating from 1956 til 1990s & the remaining part being of mixed Polish-German descent or assimilated into Polish identity as part of mixed Polish-German families)

remarkably similar to the fate of Jews in Poland post-war. they did not feel themselves attached to the land very much...
