When was the last time a non "road to" show closed with an IWGP tag title defense?Worse than that... there's not even any storylines to keep you somewhat interested. It's just 3 or 4 teams trading the belts back and forth in midcard filler matches. I remember a few years ago there was an angle heading into the tag tournament where Minoru Suzuki and Yuji Nagata formed a team... hell froze over! These two career-long rivals finally aligned together for a wild, take no prisoners, assault on the tag division!They finished the tournament with a losing record, lost 4 in a row before finally getting a win against... Zayne/Archer. Then quietly dropped before even the semi finals with a whopping 2 wins / 5 losses.Why even pull the trigger on these guys forming an alliance if you have literally no plans for them to actually do anything.

I genuinely laugh whenever a njpw ref disqualifies someone. you can step outside of the ring, toss a guy into the audience 15 times, then smash him with the bell and hit him with a chair, moon the referee, assault the comms guys, go grab a hot dog, then stand in the ring for a count out that will never happen. how the fuck is a 'tag' gonna create drama?
>>18848134A fair criticism although I believe the primary issue in New Japan's case mostly is a lack of any forethought in their tag booking. They can get away with it with singles to a degree because of preview tags but a preview tag for a tag doesn't work as well. I think it would best to attach the tag titles to a singles fued. Theoretical example: Gabe vs Tsuji for the global; simultaneously Drilla and Finlay vs. Shingo and Hiromu for the tag. Ect... basically it turns into the two factions beefing.
