Even if it had no effect on Brock, they could have had Kofi kick him or at least slip out of Lesnar's grasp once or twice. Even if he fails to land a single punch on Brock you'd build Kofi up by just having him endure Lesnar for a few minutes. Lesnar knocks him down, he gets back up. Kofi is slammed again, he gets the fuck back up and doesn't back down. Lesnar gained nothing from squashing Kofi. That was the expectation. Kofi was the underdog, the fans didn't expect him to win or even be competitive but they probably thought he'd survive long enough to gain some respect. As it played out, Kofi looks like a worthless fluke that never deserved the belt and Lesnar just looks like Lesnar.

Some of the best wrestling stories have been about defying the odds, in this instance the odds that Kofi would take a suplex from Brock and get up is slim, the small defiance is worth more than just a perfunctory squash.
