Why wasn't the COPE Open as well received as John Cena's US open challenge?
>>18840511who ended up beating him for the title in the cope open
>>18840521He got injured and had to relinquish the belt unfortunately. Despite what OP is saying his weekly defenses were a fun watch
>>18840546nice phone screenshot loser
>>18840511They should call it the Cope Gape.
Issue with a lot of these open challenges is I feel like they just go out there and put on TV tier matches, which isn't exciting. Wouldn't say the Cena ones were all that great but they'd typically be the stand out match each show, rather than "just another one".
>>18840554You’re a fat fuck on a computer crying someone using a phone in 2025Eat shit loser
>>18840567>but they'd typically be the stand out match each show, rather than "just another one".Agreed on this and I'd argue Edge's were the same. Like Cena's he would get some unique opponents too, some which weren't signed to AEW or didn't appear often. He mixed up his wrestling still a few times as well and he was doing a thing where he'd try to tie in a move he had never done before somewhere in the matchBoth his and Cena's were based. Sami's is off to a good start too. I think it's a great concept and can really make a midcard belt one of the highlights of the show

>>18840567Cena Open Challenge was hot fire because it was guys who people organically wanted to see get pushed more being put into the spotlight. When AEW does it, it doesn't have the same narrative or feel, it's like 'Daniel Garcia is here to accept the challenge!'The challenge was obviously going to end at some point as well, so every match felt like it was more and more possible he might lose. The crowd dynamic was also amazing, as was the fact that Cena was pulling out new and different stuff and they always had new spot and reversal ideas.Other open challenges just don't have the same factors and come off as forced and have no momentum. Only good one I can remember is Cody's when Dynamite first started
>>18840590Did Edge actually have good opponents? I stopped watching by then.
>>18840624It was a mixed bag of opponents. The matches were usually good but he tried to get a lot of lowercard guys exposure like Griff Garrison, Lee Moriarty, Dante Martin, etc. But then he also had solid ones with PAC, Kyle O'Reily, Penta, Suzuki, Buddy, Brody, etc. He even got Cardona a match kek which admittedly was a fun surprise and a surprisingly decent match
>>18840615I think a big part of what helped Cena's was NXT being such a hotbed of fresh ready to go talent compared to the very tired and played out main roster at the time. If you didn't have guys like Sami and Kevin etc waiting to be called up then I don't think it ends up being as memorable. Even if they had already been on the main roster I think it loses a lot of its appeal. The timing of it was perfect
Cena was still relevant when he did it, too bad he lost the title to Alberto del Rio.
>>18840511You're telling me that you don't remember the career defining moment it had for Griff Garrison's career?
>>18840511>Why wasn't the COPE Open as well receivedNice bait faggot. The Cope Open did more for AEW's ratings than Cena's gay open ever did for WWE.
