They do, but they have to be utilize to push a mid carder into a main eventer

>>18903655>The storylines were the selling point, not the tournament itself. But the tournament was the best possible vehicle for that story hence showing their worth.
Funny, a tournament helped make Hulk Hoganhttps://prowrestling.fandom.com/wiki/NJPW_IWGP_League_1983Maybe American companies just don't do them right.
>>18903659Yeah, that's what these retards don't understand.Tournament isn't about throwing random matches together. It's a storytelling vehicle. These brainlets literally can't understand storytelling beyond "guy steals other guy's bracelet"
Am>>18903660>Maybe American companies just don't do them right. They don't, at least post territories. Tournaments are great.

>>18903666tournaments are anti draws, which is why no one cares about the gook wrestling feds anymore.
>>18903609Tourneys can draw if you put actual fucking stakes and story into them. KOTR 96 was the small flint needed to add more to Austin's character until he eventually could feud with Bret.KOTR 97 helped solidify Mankind's face turn and kickstart the first-ever Hunter-Foley feud.
>>18903609He was 100% right about wrestling ditching the serious sports presentation and being an outlandish tv show. It took him a while to find the right balance between silly and crazy but once he got there it was the pinnacle of the medium
To post an unpopular opinion in current year /pw/: the BOLAs were neat up until 2013
>>18903710Good point, although those two in particular would've succeeded anyway. The redpill is that King of the Ring stopped mattering when only heels were allowed to win. Absolutely backwards logic along with babyfaces winning MITB
>>18903609Not my problem.Every wrestling promotion needs a tournament.
>>18905855>The redpill is that King of the Ring stopped mattering when only heels were allowed to winI feel that is very fair. If I recall, at the time of the last original KOTR event, Ken Shamrock (1998) was the last babyface to win KOTR.
Deadly Game is objectively the best thing Russo ever booked and that was an entire one-night tournament that made sense.SCSA won a nothing tournament and was wrestling Bret Hart a couple of months later off that. Macho Man Randy Savage was made at WM 4.Tournaments work, desu. WWE just stopped using them for whatever reason. You could even argue guys like Angle and Lesnar weren't taken as seriously until their KOTR wins. Billy Gunn is legit the only real bad spot.
As I recall, most of WM4 consisted of a tournament and winning that tournament is what truly put Randy Savage over. So nah, Vince knew that tournaments can be good if done right. But above all, Vince was right about one thing, good matches alone just aren't enough. You have to have good storytelling too, or else all the good matches in the world don't matter.
>>18903649>t.Vince
>>18903609he's kind of righttournaments don't really work in places with strong face/heel divides.
>>18903609>No ads in the ring>Not breaking kayfabe as much>humiliating wrestlers that get uppity so the roster knows their place as employees
>>18903624That’s a promo nobody gives a fuck that he was king of the ring. None of the shirts said king of the Ring Steve Austin it said Austin 316. He could’ve cut that promo after a match with Jake on any other show. Literally nobody by the time he was super popular in like 98 99 even had a clue that he ever was king of the Ring because they didn’t mention it. It wasn’t like a giant thing they drove home.
It’s genuinely annoying to share this Earth WWE fans. Of course tournaments have drawn in wrestling. They’ve withdrawn money outside WWE but you can’t tell that to them because they’ve been so brainwashed. They’ll just tell you that that’s not wrestling or it didn’t draw enough money to count. Tournaments have drawn well in Japan. There needs to be a WWE only board and a pro wrestling board.

He had contempt for edrones, which is always appropriate.
Deciding to move on from Austin because he wasn't drawing anymore and feeding him to Lesnar.
Tournaments with cold matches and zero background story dont work. Look at Dragonball tournament sagas, the BEST fights are the ones that have a story around It.
