The gingrification of WCW’s cruiserweight division was straight up racist.

It started as this incredible mix of Mexican and Japanese wrestlers who completely changed what American wrestling looked like. Rey Mysterio, Juventud Guerrera, Psicosis, Ultimo Dragon, Eddie Guerrero, every match felt like the future. Then WCW decided the luchadores didn’t “connect” with fans and started phasing them out.

By 2000 the division was full of generic white guys from the Power Plant. Shane Helms, Shannon Moore, Evan Karagias, Jamie Noble, Mike Sanders, Kwee Wee. Same look, same personality, zero of the energy or culture that made the division special.

It wasn’t about who could wrestle. The luchadores were better, period. It was about who the company wanted on camera, and that meant white faces. WCW took something global and alive and turned it into a bland frat boy sideshow.

The cruiserweight division didn’t evolve. It got whitewashed.
