He lost weight and learned how to talk and got over with promos then he studied English and American style to make it in WWE. Since he entered NXT he never stopped trying to improve and come up with ideas. His original push on the main roster led to a feud with Dragon Lee but that got sidelined by Dragon taking time off for his family. He then got put as the manager for Berto's team as he can speak both languages and get heat for them while they still do their athletic spots which would normally turn them face. I am guessing he doesn't want to just manage so the negotiations were based upon letting him wrestle as well and TKO bookkeepers saw him as valuable since he is useful for both WWE and AAA so they allowed HHH and co. to make a deal with him. The reason they weren't able to keep Kross is probably because TKO can't point to any data that says he would be financially viable when they have so many other people who check the same boxes.
