That time WCW paid James Brown probably six figures to show up completely unadvertised on PPV, in a lower comedy midcard angle

SuperBrawl 2000 had 70k PPV buys, down from 500k in 1999

Maybe the reason I can watch modern wrestling is because I say through wrestling in the year 2000
>>
I highly doubt they paid him even 5 figures though yeah it was obviously a waste of money regardless
>>
>>19005258
Nigga they were paying Michael Buffer 250k per appearance, this is WCW
>>
>>19005275
I'm pretty sure late 90s James Brown would do this for like $1500
>>
>>19005258
Eric Bischoff paid KISS a million dollars to have a concert on Nitro and tank the ratings a month prior to this
>>
>>19005296
a million is a little much, but I kind of get bringing KISS in since they rock and are one of the greatest bands ever. They were still white hot in the 90s too.
>>
>>19005441
This was 1999, no one cared about KISS, certainly not on a wrestling show
>>
>>19005441
KISS weren't fucking cool in late-90s
>>
>>19005441
My grand slam was supposed to be with sausage

>500k in 1999
There is no way that number is real, half a milly rednecks did not buy a ppv
>>
>>19005480
The official buyrate for Superbrawl IX was 485,000
>>
The gamble, I'm sure, was that this would make it seem like stuff like this could happen by surprise. Even though James Brown and the audience for WCW in 2000 weren't a real big crossover, it was still kind of neat because Ernest Miller was telling everyone he was friends with James Brown. And this was the payoff. I watched it live(probably through scramble vision) and was like "huh, that's James Brown. Neat"

How the fuck do you lose 400 thousand paying customers in one year? What happened?
>>
>>19006312
The attitude era happened

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Way_Out_(2000)

Compare the shit being discussed in this thread with what WWF did 7 days later and it all makes sense.
>>
Music is such a specific thing, yes James brown is an icon but not everyone wants to go to a James Brown concert and even less want to watch one on TV. Obviously doomed to fail, but they were playing with someone else's money and this was fun for them.
>>
>>19006352
Jesus Christ, sometimes it's hard to believe that these two companies were going on at the same time. That in one company you had Triple H vs Cactus Jack while in the other you had this bullshit going on
>>
>>19006662
I'm like "it wasn't all just a james brown concerts" but no their PPV the same month looks really bad.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuperBrawl_2000
One of these days I'm going to go back through the nitros and figure out when I stopped watching. I know I stuck around long enough for Booker to win the title.
>>
Why did the buyrate drop so much?
>>
>>19006702
It was probably something to do with Russo being the main character.
>>
>>19006766
1999 is the year WCW collapsed, and a lot of people bring up the fingerpoke, when in reality it's a culmination of years of bad booking, half promises that are never delivered on, no resolution to feuds that have been going on for years, and just a stale product while the WWF was producing their greatest content ever. You can only jerk your fans around for so much until they quit watching
>>
>>19006702
People use "WCW 2000" to refer to something bad for a reason, top to bottom everything is dogshit that year. It's not like some years of a company where the main event sucks but the midcard is good, or the midcard sucks but they got good main events, all of it is terrible
>>
>>19006312
They hired Russo.
