This was the basis of the conflict between Punk and Kevin Steen that followed them both in subsequent years after Steen mentioned it in a shoot that got uploaded to YouTube. Punk himself went from wearing basketball shorts to trunks in obedience to this trend. The idea was that you must be some unserious shitter playing around in a ring on the weekends if you weren't taking care of your body enough to don a traditional pair of trunks. When Punk was the head trainer of the short-lived ROH wrestling school, he instituted this rule to all of his paying students (= manlets with zero charisma or athleticism). Not long after this, the unserious shitters began wearing trunks themselves as a means of attempting to kid themselves and others into believing that they weren't shitters. The trend died shortly thereafter.

It's a Japan thing that the trainers in the US adopted. When you're training, you wear generic young lion gear which is trunks/shorts, knee pads, elbow pads, and boots. When you're "trained" you're allowed to do your own gear and gimmick. Sometimes in Japan it plays in to stories. Shibata for example "rejected" custom gear in favour of the trunks to show that he's dedicated to training the young lions. Devitt/Balor also rejected the custom gear in favour of the trunks because he wanted to be shown as a Gaijin product of the young lions program. It's also so fucking stupid bros.
